Hiriketiya
A small horseshoe surf bay at Dikwella in Matara District on Sri Lanka's south coast. Beginner beach break and left reef in one bay, with Dickwella folded into the same stay.
December is in Hiriketiya's main season: Sri Lanka Tourism describes the south-western coast as sunny with a calm sea from November to March, with December to February the peak tourist season. The bay has a beginner beach break and a reef break to the left for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Hiriketiya is a compact horseshoe bay at Dikwella (also spelled Dickwella) in Matara District, on Sri Lanka's south coast. Navy southern whale cruises from Galle past Mirissa are scheduled from November to April. On 17 October 2026 the Navy's whale-watching site listed southern cruises from Galle from November to April and Trincomalee cruises from May to October, and did not mention a pause. Confirm sailings for your date on that site.

Where is Hiriketiya and how is the bay laid out?
Hiriketiya sits at Dikwella on the coastal strip east of Matara, between Mirissa and Tangalle. Hiri Surf School, which works on the sand, lists the site as Hiriketiya Bay (Horseshoe Bay), Dikwella, Southern Province, with GPS 5.962425, 80.707001.
Dots Bay House, a bay operator, describes the layout like this when the season is in full swing: beginners learn on the beach break, while intermediate and advanced surfers use the reef break toward the left. Hiri Surf School says all beginner lessons stay in waist-deep, sandy areas of the bay. Treat the reef as a separate decision for experienced riders only, and ask a coach on the day about tide, swell and crowd.
This is not a substitute for a live marine forecast. Use the surfing guide for the ability and safety checks that apply to any Sri Lanka break, and the beaches guide before you swim.
Hiriketiya surf: when to go, beginner vs intermediate
When to go. Use Sri Lanka Tourism's south-west calendar, not an Arugam Bay one. Tourism's beach page says north-east winds make the south-western coast sunny with a calm sea from November to March. Its weather page calls December to February the peak tourist season on that coast. Sri Lanka Tourism's surfing page names Hikkaduwa, Wewala and Narigama when the Arugam Bay season ends; it does not name Hiriketiya. Hiriketiya is further east on the same south-coast strip, so match the day's sea rather than a town slogan.
October and November are the second inter-monsoon, when showers can fall anywhere. Matara District averages 339.1 mm in October and 333.3 mm in November on the Department of Meteorology's 1991 to 2020 figures in the October 2026 outlook annex. December drops to 200.3 mm. A wetter shoulder month does not cancel a lesson, but it does argue for a land backup.
Beginner vs intermediate, in one bay.
| Zone | Who it is for (operator pages, 14 Oct 2026) | What to confirm on the day |
|---|---|---|
| Beach break, sandy inside of the horseshoe | Beginners. Hiri Surf School says all beginner lessons stay in waist-deep, sandy areas | Tide, crowd, and that the lesson is not drifting onto the reef |
| Reef break toward the left | Intermediate and advanced, per Dots Bay House | Swell, tide, rocks, and whether a coach is with you |
| Kids lessons (ages 5 to 12) | Hiri Surf School, 1 hour, waist-deep zone, LKR 6,000 per guest on 14 October 2026 | Age, board type, and cancellation if the sea is too strong |
Do not treat "Hiriketiya is a beginner bay" as permission to paddle the reef. The two breaks share one horseshoe. Ask the school which peak you are using.
Lesson prices on 14 October 2026, still the figures on Hiri Surf School's site when this section was written, are in the table below this page's lesson heading. Re-check before you pay. Board-only rental for walk-up visitors still had no public LKR rate on the operator pages checked 14 October 2026.
For ability checks that apply on any Sri Lanka coast, stay with the surfing guide. Compare Ahangama if you want more than one south-coast break.
When is the best time to visit Hiriketiya?
Plan with two official calendars, and do not mix them. Sri Lanka Tourism's beach page says north-east winds make the south-western coast sunny with a calm sea from November to March. Its weather page calls December to February the peak tourist season on the southwest coast, with clear skies and calm seas. October and November fall in the second inter-monsoon, when showers can fall anywhere.
If you also want a whale-watching boat, use the Sri Lanka Navy, not the tourism weather page: southern cruises are scheduled from Galle past Mirissa from November to April. On 17 October 2026 the Navy's whale-watching site listed southern cruises from Galle from November to April and Trincomalee cruises from May to October, and did not mention a pause. Confirm sailings for your date on that site. Hiriketiya itself is not a whale-watching harbour.
Matara District, where Dikwella sits, has these 1991 to 2020 average rainfalls in the Department of Meteorology's October 2026 seasonal outlook annex:
| Month | Matara District average rainfall |
|---|---|
| October | 339.1 mm |
| November | 333.3 mm |
| December | 200.3 mm |
A wetter shoulder month does not cancel a trip, but it does argue for flexible days and a land backup. Compare coasts in the east coast vs south coast guide, and see Sri Lanka in November and the best time guide for island-wide context.
Sri Lanka Tourism's surfing page says that when the Arugam Bay season ends, the southern recreational surf season begins at Hikkaduwa, Wewala and Narigama. It does not name Hiriketiya. Hiriketiya is further east on the same south-coast strip; still match your level to the day's sea rather than to a season label.
How much do surf lessons cost in Hiriketiya?
Only quote prices you can open on an operator page on the day you write. On 14 October 2026, Hiri Surf School published these rates for Hiriketiya Beach:
| Lesson type | Duration | Published price (14 Oct 2026) | Included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group | 1 hour 15 minutes | LKR 5,000 per guest | Softboard, leash, UV rashguard |
| Semi-private (2 guests per coach) | 1 hour 15 minutes | LKR 6,000 per guest | Surf gear included |
| Private (1-on-1) | 1 hour 15 minutes | LKR 8,000 per guest | Surf gear included |
| Kids (ages 5 to 12) | 1 hour | LKR 6,000 per guest | Soft safety board, waist-deep zone |
Multi-day packages on the same page ran LKR 13,000 for a one-day double session, LKR 21,000 for three days, and LKR 30,000 for five days. Prices change; confirm on the operator's site before you pay.
Dots Bay House describes the same beach-break / left-reef split and says guests can book lessons through its concierge, but it does not publish lesson rates on that page. Its stay page says bookings include free surfboard usage for guests. Board-only rental rates for walk-up visitors were not listed as a public LKR figure on either operator page on 14 October 2026, so this guide does not invent a hire range. Ask on the sand and check fins and dings before you pay.
Where to stay in Hiriketiya by area
No hotel is recommended or paid for here. The area split below is general guidance, not a sourced inventory or occupancy count:
- Around the horseshoe bay. Walkable to the beach break, reef view, cafes and surf schools. Useful if surfing and short walks are the point of the stay.
- Slightly inland or uphill from the sand. A short walk or tuk-tuk to the water if you want the bay without sleeping on the busiest strip.
- Dickwella town and Dickwella Beach. The wider service town beside Hiriketiya: shops and the coastal road toward Tangalle. Stay here when you want more space than the horseshoe offers, while still using Hiriketiya for surf lessons.
- Toward Tangalle / quieter bays. A different base if your next days are deep-south coast or Yala. See Tangalle rather than treating every bay east of Matara as Hiriketiya.
The how many days guide helps decide whether the transfer from Colombo or Mirissa earns more than one night. General guidance, with no sourced stay-length table: one night rarely earns a long road day.
Getting to Hiriketiya from Dickwella, Matara and Colombo
From Dickwella. Hiriketiya is the bay at Dikwella, not a separate town hours away. Once you are in Dickwella, local road or a short tuk-tuk reaches the horseshoe. Confirm the drop-off as "Hiriketiya Beach" so drivers do not leave you only at the main Dickwella junction.
From Matara. Continue east along the coastal road toward Dickwella and Tangalle. Matara is an mTicketing railway station (checked 14 October 2026). From the station, finish by road. This page does not publish a fixed taxi fare or bus time, because no official door-to-door fare table for Matara to Hiriketiya was verified today.
From Colombo. Two common patterns:
- Coast Line rail toward Matara or Beliatta, then a short road transfer. Sri Lanka Railways' reservation FAQ lists Colombo Fort to Beliatta among routes you can reserve online. Its mTicketing list includes Galle, Matara and Beliatte. Search the exact stations and date; do not assume every train stops where you hope.
- Hired car or intercity bus along the south-west corridor. Use the getting around guide for notices, reservation rules and fallback planning. From the airport, see Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa.
International flights arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo. See direct flights to Sri Lanka. Hiriketiya has no airport of its own.
From Mirissa or Galle. Stay on the coastal road or Coast Line east. Mirissa is the usual previous beach or whale-watching stop; Galle is the heritage stop. Avoid packing a dawn whale trip and a same-day hotel move to Hiriketiya without buffer.
Dickwella as part of the same stay
Fold Dickwella into the Hiriketiya plan instead of booking two bases a few minutes apart. Dickwella supplies town services and the road link toward Beliatta and Tangalle. Hiriketiya supplies the horseshoe bay and the surf schools. One luggage drop covering both is almost always better than changing hotels.
If your trip is really about quieter multi-bay coast or a safari link, compare Tangalle and the deep south region rather than stretching Hiriketiya to cover every southern intention. For the whole strip, use the south coast hub. Our south coast itinerary gives Hiriketiya two nights on its 7 and 10 day routes.
Hiriketiya or Mirissa?
Choose Hiriketiya for a compact surf bay with lessons on the sand and a small walkable horseshoe. Choose Mirissa when a longer beach and a whale-watching departure matter more than a reef-and-beach-break cove. The Sri Lanka Navy schedules those southern whale cruises from November to April. On 17 October 2026 the Navy's whale-watching site listed southern cruises from Galle from November to April and Trincomalee cruises from May to October, and did not mention a pause. Confirm sailings for your date on that site. Many itineraries do both only when the nights are split cleanly and the boat morning has a backup plan. See the whale-watching guide before you pay for a cruise.
For a wider bay with more beginner schools, compare Weligama. If you want rest as much as surf, read Ayurveda in Sri Lanka or the 7-day wellness itinerary.
Here for yoga too? Our south coast yoga guide compares drop-in prices at Hiriketiya's studios and when you need to book.
The town next door: Dickwella, about 2 km away, has the Hummanaya blowhole, the Wewurukannala temple and the main coast road buses.

What is there to do in Dickwella besides Hiriketiya?
Dickwella (Dikwella) is the service town beside the bay: shops and the road link toward Tangalle and Beliatta. Treat Dickwella and Hiriketiya as one stay rather than two hotel moves. For quieter multi-bay coast further east, see Tangalle.
Should beginners surf the Hiriketiya reef?
No. Dots Bay House puts beginners on the beach break and intermediate and advanced surfers on the reef toward the left. Hiri Surf School keeps all beginner lessons in waist-deep, sandy water. Treat the reef as a separate decision after a coach checks swell, tide and crowd.
