What is the weather in Mirissa in November?

Quick answer: Warm, humid and wet. Mirissa is in Matara District, which averages 333.3 mm of rain in November, almost the same as October and about 40 percent more than December. The sea can be rough on any given day. The Navy's whale cruises are scheduled to start from Galle in November, but boats cancel for weather. Plan about three rainy days in a week, keep two spare days, and book your boat trip for the middle of your stay, not the last day.

Mirissa is a small beach town on the coast road between Galle and Matara, and the main harbour for whale-watching boats on the south coast. This page is about one thing: what November weather and sea are likely to do to a stay there. For prices, the beach and getting there, use the Mirissa destination page. For the whale rules and the full month table, use the whale-watching guide.

How much does it rain in Mirissa in November?

Mirissa has no weather station of its own. The closest official numbers are the district average for Matara and the long-term records at the Galle and Hambantota stations on either side of it.

MonthMatara District rain (mm)Change from the month before
October339.1
November333.3Almost the same
December200.3About 40 percent lower

Source: Department of Meteorology, 1991 to 2020 district averages, from the annex to its October to December 2026 rainfall outlook (the same table is on our October guide). These are averages for a whole district over 30 years, not a forecast.

Two things stand out. November is as wet as October, so do not treat it as a "dry start" to the season. And the big drop comes in December. If your dates can move, early December is the safer bet on the averages. The monthly figures cannot tell you whether late November beats early November, so we do not claim that.

For 2026 the signal leans wet. The Department's outlook issued on 2 October 2026 said above-normal rain was more likely across most of the country in November, which we quote from our November planning guide. Treat that as a reason to keep a rain plan, not as a ban on going.

What is the sea like in Mirissa in November?

Sri Lanka Tourism calls October and November the second inter-monsoon, with "occasional heavy showers" and seas that "can be rough". It calls December to February the peak season on the south-west coast, with clear skies and calm seas (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page, read 24 October 2026). So November sits between the rough shoulder and the calm peak.

No source gives wave heights for Mirissa in November, so we give none. What you can do is read the official sea forecast each morning. The Department of Meteorology's sea-area bulletin covers the coast from Galle to Matara and Hambantota, and it uses plain words such as "rough" and "very rough". Our rule of thumb, which is advice and not an official scale: if the bulletin says rough for your coast, skip the boat and swim only where a lifeguard is on duty.

What the weather snapshot said on 24 October 2026

This is a one-day snapshot of the transition into November, and it will be out of date when you read it. The Department of Meteorology's forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. on 24 October said:

  • A low-pressure area near the North Andaman Islands was expected to become a depression that day and a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of 26 October.
  • The system was not expected to hit Sri Lanka directly, but more rain was expected in the south-west over the next few days.
  • Sea areas off the coast from Kankesanthurai to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle and Matara could expect showers or thundershowers, with south-westerly winds of 30 to 40 kmph, rising to 50 to 60 kmph at times.
  • The sea off that coast may be rough at times, with gusts of 60 to 70 kmph and very rough seas during thundershowers.

The same forecast carries the Department's rainfall scale, which helps you read any later bulletin:

How many rainy days should you plan for in a week in Mirissa?

Here is the planning tool this page adds. The WMO normals count days with at least 1 mm of rain, and days with at least 10 mm. We scaled the monthly counts down to a 7-night stay. Mirissa sits between the Galle station to the west and the Hambantota station to the east, so we show both.

Source: WMO climate normals 1991 to 2020 for Galle (43495) and Hambantota (43497); the scaling (monthly count times 7, divided by the days in the month) is our arithmetic. These are averages, not a forecast.

How to use it:

  1. Plan on about three days with some rain in a November week. Many of those will be short showers, and the 10 mm column shows that about one to two days a week bring real rain.
  2. Hambantota's November is wetter than its October, while Galle's is drier. That is the pattern in the numbers. Mirissa is in between, so expect a mixed picture.
  3. December is the gentlest column in every case. That is the weather case for a late-November or December stay, set against higher demand in the peak season (see Sri Lanka in December).

When do whale-watching boats run from Mirissa in November?

The Sri Lanka Navy says its whale-watching cruises are scheduled to operate from Galle from November to April, and from Trincomalee from May to October. On 24 October 2026 its home page still said so, and carried a note that cruises were being run from Trincomalee Harbour from 12 July 2025. It did not state a pause for the southern ship. The southern cruise sails from Galle past Mirissa and Dondra Head.

Past Navy notices have started the southern season in October, in 2017 and on 6 October 2018. So the start is not fixed to 1 November. Confirm your date on whalewatching.navy.lk.

The International Whaling Commission handbook lists blue whales off the south from December to March, so November is the early edge of the main window, not the middle. That is not a sightings forecast. No source can promise a whale.

Private boats leave Mirissa Harbour and set their own dates. On 14 October 2026 Raja and the Whales listed LKR 20,000 per adult and a 6.00 am check-in, and the Navy's southern cruise listed US$80 for a foreign adult. See the Mirissa page for the full price table. We name these only as dated price samples, not as picks.

A simple boat-day rule for a wet month

The Sea Mammals Regulations say a whale-watching boat must not leave in bad weather and must come back at once if the weather turns, and that trips run between 5.30 am and 7 pm. That means weather cancellations are normal, not a scam. Use this plan:

Your stayWhen to book the boatWhy
3 nightsNight 1 or 2, with a free morning afterOne cancelled morning still leaves a second try
5 to 7 nightsAround night 2 or 3Leaves four or more spare days
Boat is the main reason you cameAdd two extra nightsWeather, not the boat, is the limit

Before you pay, ask what happens if the trip is cancelled for weather or if no whales are seen, and ask to see the boat's current licence. Never join a trip that promises a swim with whales.

Which November dates fall on public holidays?

The Central Bank's 2026 list has two November public and bank holidays: Deepawali Festival Day on Sunday 8 November and Ill Full Moon Poya Day on Tuesday 24 November. Banks and government offices close on both. Plan cash and any paperwork around them. We have not checked how busy Mirissa gets on those dates, so we do not claim crowds.

What should you pack and plan for a wet Mirissa week?

  • A light rain jacket and a dry bag for your phone. Showers can be heavy.
  • Quick-dry clothes. Humid air dries cotton slowly.
  • Sun cream. Cloud still lets sun through.
  • One indoor or half-day plan in Galle. Galle Fort is about 34 km away by road (see Mirissa to Galle), and a fort walk works in a drizzle.
  • Refundable or flexible room rates for at least part of the stay. Sea state changes day by day.

If you are still choosing between bases, the Weligama vs Mirissa vs Tangalle guide compares rain, surf and whale access. For more beach choices in the season, see best beaches in November and December, and for room price samples see Hiriketiya and Mirissa guest houses. If the sea looks too rough for you, the Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains why and where the weather is drier.

What does this page not tell you?

  • It does not give wave heights, water temperature or a sightings rate. We found no official Mirissa figure for them.
  • It does not give weekly rain for November, only monthly averages.
  • It does not say how crowded the beach is on any date.
  • It does not quote monthly rainfall in millimetres for the Galle station. We use rain-day counts for the two stations instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weather in Mirissa in November?

Warm and wet. Matara District, which includes Mirissa, averages 333.3 mm of rain in November on the Department of Meteorology's 1991 to 2020 figures, close to October (339.1 mm) and well above December (200.3 mm). Sri Lanka Tourism calls October and November the second inter-monsoon, with occasional heavy showers and sometimes rough seas.

Is November a good time to visit Mirissa?

It can be, if your plans are flexible. November is the start of the Navy's southern whale season, but it is still a wet month, and the Department of Meteorology's October 2026 outlook said above-normal rain was more likely for November 2026. Keep spare days and avoid fixing a long transfer on the same day as a boat trip.

Is the sea calm in Mirissa in November?

Not reliably. Sri Lanka Tourism says seas can be rough in October and November and calls December to February the time of calm seas on the south-west coast. Check the Department of Meteorology's sea-area forecast and the local flags on the day.

Is whale watching open in Mirissa in November?

The Sri Lanka Navy says its whale-watching cruises run from Galle from November to April, passing Mirissa and Dondra Head. Private boats set their own dates. On 24 October 2026 the Navy home page did not state a pause, but confirm your sailing on whalewatching.navy.lk. No operator can promise a sighting.

How many rainy days will I get in a week in Mirissa in November?

About 3 days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a rough guide. That is our arithmetic from the Galle and Hambantota station averages (14.9 and 13.0 rain days in November), scaled to 7 days. Mirissa sits between those two stations. It is an average, not a forecast, so a real week can be wetter or drier.

Is Mirissa better in early or late November?

We cannot say from the data. The long-term figures are monthly, not weekly. What we can say is that December is about 40 percent drier than November on the Matara District average (200.3 mm against 333.3 mm). That does not tell you whether the last week of November is drier than the first.

Do I need to book a whale-watching boat in advance in November?

Check the operator's own booking page. The Navy and at least one private operator publish booking details on their sites. Ask what happens if the trip is cancelled for weather, because the Sea Mammals Regulations say boats must not leave in bad weather and must return at once if it turns.

Is Mirissa Beach safe for swimming in November?

It depends on the day and the exact spot. Check the Department of Meteorology's marine information, follow the warning flags and lifeguards, and swim near other people. In a wet month, treat a rough-sea forecast as a reason to stay out of the water.
