Sri Lanka in October
October is Sri Lanka's second inter-monsoon, with afternoon storms possible anywhere and slightly above-normal rain forecast for 2026. Where to go, what is open and how to plan, checked 15 October 2026.

Is October a good time to visit Sri Lanka? (Checked 15 October 2026)
Quick answer: yes, if you plan around rain. October is in Sri Lanka's second inter-monsoon, so afternoon or evening thunderstorms can happen anywhere on the island. That does not rule out a trip. Plan short drives, keep a spare day, and check the forecast for each stop.
October has real upsides. Storms tend to come later in the day, so mornings are often usable, the east coast and the deep south are drier than the south-west on the long-term averages, and Yala was scheduled to reopen in the middle of the month. This page has no affiliate links.
Here is what was open or closed when we checked:

| Sri Lanka Navy whale cruises | Scheduled Nov to Apr from Galle (Navy site, 17 Oct 2026); confirm sailing. October is outside the southern season | Whale watching |
| India to Sri Lanka ferry | No suspension notice found; a monsoon pause usually comes in late October or November | India to Sri Lanka ferry |
This week (checked 22 October 2026): the Department of Meteorology's forecast for 22 October, issued at 5.30 a.m. that day, said: "The low level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka has developed into a low-pressure area." "Under the influence of this system, an enhancement of rainfall is expected over the island and the deep and shallow sea areas around the island during today." It said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern, North-western and Southern provinces and in Mannar district and cloudy skies can be expected over these areas; showers or thunder showers will occur after 1.00 p.m. elsewhere of the island; and "Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces." Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning. It asked the general public, as well as the naval and fishing communities, to be attentive to its future forecasts and bulletins, and to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers (Met Department forecast, PDF). The newest landslide warning on the Disaster Management Centre site when we checked, issued at 10 pm on 21 October and valid to 10 pm on 22 October (its 25th update), put parts of Kandy (Udapalatha, Medadumbara and Kundasale) and Nuwara Eliya (Ambagamuwa and Norwood) at Level 2 (Amber), and parts of Badulla (including Haputale), Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Monaragala and Nuwara Eliya at Level 1 (Yellow). No area was at Level 3 (Red) on the first page of that bulletin (landslide warning, PDF; all landslide warnings). That warning expires at 10 pm on 22 October, so check the newest one before any hill drive or boat trip, and save Sri Lanka Tourism's 24-hour hotline, 1912.
Update for 23 October 2026: the Department of Meteorology's forecast for 23 October, issued at 2.00 p.m. on 22 October, said the low-pressure area "is moving westward away from island. However, the influence of this system may persist tomorrow." It forecast showers or thundershowers at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and North-western provinces and in Anuradhapura and Galle districts, with "Heavy falls above 100 mm" likely at some places there, and showers after 1.00 p.m. elsewhere, with fairly heavy falls above 75 mm likely at some places. The same forecast said another low-pressure area is likely to form over the south-east and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around 23 October and then move west-northwest and intensify (Met Department forecast, PDF; Newswire, 22 October). If you have hill drives, boat trips or long transfers in the next few days, keep a spare day and check the newest forecast and landslide warning each morning.
Hill-country travel (checked 23 October 2026): On the evening of 22 October 2026, the Disaster Management Centre asked travellers to reconsider planned trips to the central hills and other rain-affected areas, and to check road and weather updates on 117 before travelling (Daily Mirror). Ada Derana reported landslide early warnings the same day for selected areas in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura at Level 2, and further Level 1 areas in Badulla, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Monaragala, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura (Ada Derana). The Met Department's 5.30 a.m. forecast on 23 October 2026 said the nearby low-pressure area was moving west away from the island but that its influence may persist today, with showers or thundershowers at times in Central Province among others, and morning mist in Central and Uva provinces (Met forecast, PDF). Newswire reported Met commentary that rainfall could continue until about 27 October as winds move across the island (Newswire, 22 October). Check 117 and the newest Met bulletin before setting out. This note does not claim that any named road is closed.
Update for 24 October 2026: The Department of Meteorology said on 23 October that rain will continue in the south-west of the island until 27 October. For 24 October it forecast showers or thundershowers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and North Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts, with mist in parts of the Central and Uva provinces in the early morning. A new low-pressure area near the North Andaman Islands is forecast to become a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of 26 October. The Department does not expect it to hit Sri Lanka directly, but wind patterns linked to it are expected to bring more rain to the south-west (Colombo Tribune, 23 October). The landslide warning valid from 4 pm on 23 October to 4 pm on 24 October (the 27th update, message LEWM-23-10-2026-1600-27) put parts of Kegalle (Mawanella, Dehiowita, Aranayake, Ruwanwella and Deraniyagala), Nuwara Eliya (Norwood and Ambagamuwa) and Ratnapura (Ratnapura, Elapatha and Kuruwita) at Level 2 (Amber). Kandy divisions were at Level 1 (Yellow), and no area was at Level 3 (Red) (NBRO landslide warning, PDF). That warning ended at 4 pm on 24 October, so open the newest one before any hill drive. See also the train suspension below.
Update for 25 October 2026: The Department of Meteorology's forecast for 25 October, issued at 5.30 a.m., said the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal near the North Andaman Islands has become a depression. It is expected to become a cyclonic storm by the morning of 26 October and a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of 27 October. The Department does not expect a direct impact on Sri Lanka, but says rain in the south-west of the island is expected to increase over the next few days. It forecast showers or thundershowers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North Western and Northern provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Anuradhapura districts, with heavy showers above 100 mm likely at some places there. Fairly strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph are expected at times on the western slopes of the Central hills and in the Northern, North Central and North Western provinces (Met Department forecast, carried by The Island, 25 October). The Department's 2 p.m. forecast on 24 October described the same storm track (Met forecast, PDF). The landslide warning valid from 4 pm on 24 October to 4 pm on 25 October (the 28th update, message LEWM-24-10-2026-1600-28) listed 11 divisions, all at Level 1 (Yellow, Watch); ten moved down one level from the day before (Yatiyanthota was already at Level 1): Kegalle (Deraniyagala, Yatiyanthota, Dehiowita, Aranayake, Mawanella and Ruwanwella), Nuwara Eliya (Norwood and Ambagamuwa) and Ratnapura (Ratnapura, Kuruwita and Elapatha). No area was at Level 2 (Amber) or Level 3 (Red) (NBRO landslide warning, PDF). A lower level is not an all clear, and more rain is forecast. That warning ended at 4 pm on 25 October, so open the newest one on the Disaster Management Centre list before any hill drive or boat trip. Checked on 25 October 2026.
Update for 26 October 2026 (updated for the 6 pm NBRO notice): The Department of Meteorology's forecast for 26 October, issued at 5.30 a.m., said the Bay of Bengal depression has become a deep depression. It is very likely to become a cyclonic storm on 26 October and a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by 27 October. The Department still does not expect a direct impact on Sri Lanka, but says rain is expected to increase over the south-west of the island during the next few days. It forecast showers or thundershowers at times in the Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North Western, Central and North Central provinces and in the Trincomalee district, with heavy showers above 100 mm likely at some places there. Winds of about 40 to 50 kmph are expected at times on the western slopes of the Central hills, in the Northern, North Central and North Western provinces, and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts (Met Department forecast, carried by The Island, 26 October). At 9.30 a.m. the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre said the system had intensified into Cyclonic Storm Arnab, expected to become a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal later on 26 October and a very severe cyclonic storm on 27 October. Its warning to multi-day fishing boats covers Bay of Bengal sea areas between 10°N and 20°N and 80°E and 95°E (warning, PDF). The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre issued an Amber heavy rain advisory at 3 a.m. on 26 October, valid until 5.30 a.m. on 27 October, for the Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, North Western, Central and Southern provinces and the Anuradhapura district. Amber means be prepared (heavy rain advisory, PDF). NBRO's landslide early warning issued at 6 pm on 26 October (message ID LEWM-26-10-2026-1800-33, the 33rd update), valid until 6 pm on 27 October, replaced the 2.45 pm notice and listed ten districts. Level 3 (Red) covered Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya District; Kuruwita, Elapatha, Ayagama, Openayake, Pelmadulla and Ratnapura in Ratnapura District; and Bulathsinhala and Dodangoda in Kalutara District. Level 2 (Amber) covered Kothmale West and Kotmale East in Nuwara Eliya; Pasbage Korale, Udunuwara, Ganga Ihala Korale, Udapalatha and Yatinuwara in Kandy; Kegalle, Mawanella, Ruwanwella, Rambukkana, Galigamuwa, Aranayake, Deraniyagala, Dehiowita, Yatiyanthota, Warakapola and Bulathkohupitiya in Kegalle; Attanagalla in Gampaha; Kurunegala in Kurunegala; Balangoda, Kiriella, Nivithigala, Kalawana, Eheliyagoda and Godakawela in Ratnapura; and Agalawatta, Walallawita, Millaniya, Palindanuwara, Ingiriya, Madurawala and Mathugama in Kalutara. Level 1 (Yellow) covered Seethawaka and Padukka in Colombo; Thawalama, Neluwa, Niyagama, Elpitiya and Karandeniya in Galle; Beruwala and Horana in Kalutara; Doluwa, Hatharaliyadda, Thumpane, Gangawata Korale, Udadumbara, Akurana, Kundasale and Medadumbara in Kandy; Mawathagama, Alawwa and Narammala in Kurunegala; Pitabeddara and Kotapola in Matara; Nuwara Eliya and Thalawakele in Nuwara Eliya; and Kahawaththa, Weligepola, Kolonna and Imbulpe in Ratnapura (NBRO landslide early warning, 6 pm, PDF). The Department of Meteorology's 4 pm forecast on 26 October said the system is not expected to hit Sri Lanka directly but showery conditions are expected to continue in the south-west of the island over the next few days, with fairly heavy falls above 75 mm likely at some places in the Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North Western, Central and North Central provinces and in the Trincomalee district (Met Department forecast, 4 pm, PDF). NewsWire reported that heavy rainfall is forecast across Sri Lanka on 26, 27 and 28 October (NewsWire on X, 26 October 2026). Newswire also reported at 4.24 pm on 26 October that all schools across Sri Lanka will be closed on Tuesday 27 October as a precaution because of the weather, and that the closure applies only to 27 October (Newswire, 26 October 2026). On the warning's own scale, Level 1 means more than 75 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, Level 2 more than 100 mm and Level 3 more than 150 mm. A warning level is not an all clear for any road, and roads in these areas may close at short notice. The 6 pm notice ended at 6 pm on 27 October; check the latest NBRO notice on the Disaster Management Centre list and follow local authorities before any hill drive, river trip or boat trip. Checked on 26 October 2026.
Update, morning of 27 October 2026: The Department of Meteorology's forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. on 27 October says the Bay of Bengal storm, named Arnab, has become a very severe cyclonic storm. At 2.30 a.m. it was about 890 km north-east of Kankesanthurai, and it is expected to cross the Indian coast through Andhra Pradesh by 11.30 a.m. on 28 October. The Department does not expect a direct impact on Sri Lanka, but says showers will continue in the south-west of the island today. It lists showers or thundershowers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-Western provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, with fairly heavy falls above 75 mm likely at some places, and winds of about 40 to 50 kmph at times on the western slopes of the Central hills (Daily Mirror, 27 October 2026; Met Department forecast, 5.30 a.m., PDF with English text on page 2). The Amber heavy rain advisory issued at 3 a.m. on 26 October ended at 5.30 a.m. on 27 October, and at about 8 a.m. the Disaster Management Centre's list showed no newer heavy rain advisory. At that time NBRO's 6 pm notice on 26 October was the newest landslide warning we found; it ran until 6 pm on 27 October. A forecast is not an all clear, so check the latest NBRO notice and local authorities before you travel. In the newest reports we found, the suspension of trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola still had no restart date.
Update, evening of 27 October 2026: NBRO's next landslide early warning, issued at 4 pm on 27 October 2026 (message ID LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, the 34th update) and valid until 4 pm on 28 October, replaces the 6 pm notice of 26 October, which has expired. It lists the same divisions at the same levels as the 26 October notice. Level 3 (Red) again covers Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya District; Kuruwita, Elapatha, Ayagama, Openayake, Pelmadulla and Ratnapura in Ratnapura District; and Bulathsinhala and Dodangoda in Kalutara District (NBRO landslide early warning, 4 pm on 27 October, PDF). Warnings change daily, so check the latest notice on the Disaster Management Centre list and follow local authorities before you travel.
Update, evening of 27 October 2026, Gin Ganga: The Irrigation Department's Amber flood warning for the Gin Ganga valley (number 01, issued at 10.30 p.m. on 26 October) is valid until 10.30 p.m. on 27 October. It says low-lying areas in the Thawalama, Nagoda, Baddegama and Welivitiya-Divithura divisions may see minor flooding within 24 hours (Gin Ganga flood warning, PDF). In the Disaster Management Centre's 6.30 p.m. river report the Gin Ganga at Baddegama read 4.13 m at 6 p.m., at Minor Flood level (4.00 m) and rising (river report, 6.30 p.m., PDF). That is a reading at one hour, and a warning is not a forecast of exact levels, so check the latest notices and local authorities if you are in those areas.
What is the weather like in Sri Lanka in October?
Warm and humid, with storms that mostly come later in the day. Sri Lanka Tourism describes October and November as a time of "occasional heavy showers across the island", when "seas can be rough but the interior highlands are lush and scenic" (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page).
For 2026, the signal is a little wetter than normal:
- October forecast: slightly above-normal rain for most of the country, near-normal in the Northern Province.
- The whole season: the Department expects above-normal rain for October to December across most of Sri Lanka, and says rain is likely to increase "particularly during October and November". It recommends preparing for floods, flash floods and landslides.
- Why: El Niño is present, with a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño through late 2026 (consensus seasonal outlook, 2 October 2026).
The table shows how much rain falls in October in an average year, next to November for comparison. The pattern surprises many people: the south-west gets the most October rain, while the deep south and east get much less.
| District | October average (mm) | November average (mm) | December average (mm) | Places in the district |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kalutara | 438.7 | 347.3 | - | Kalutara, Beruwala |
| Kegalle | 436.3 | 370.2 | - | Pinnawala |
| Galle | 396.8 | 316.8 | 209.5 | Galle, Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa |
| Ratnapura | 396.4 | 393.7 | - | Ratnapura |
| Colombo | 382.0 | 350.3 | - | Colombo |
| Nuwara Eliya | 373.9 | 335.9 | - | Nuwara Eliya, Nanu Oya |
| Matara | 339.1 | 333.3 | 200.3 | Weligama, Mirissa, Hiriketiya |
| Kandy | 311.3 | 327.3 | - | Kandy |
| Badulla | 265.9 | 359.7 | - | Ella |
| Matale | 254.2 | 331.7 | - | Sigiriya, Dambulla |
| Anuradhapura | 219.0 | 259.6 | - | Anuradhapura |
| Jaffna | 210.2 | 334.4 | - | Jaffna |
| Trincomalee | 205.8 | 335.2 | - | Trincomalee, Nilaveli |
| Ampara | 192.8 | 315.4 | - | Arugam Bay |
| Hambantota | 188.7 | 275.3 | 167.2 | Tangalle, Yala |
| Mannar | 183.3 | - | - | Mannar |
Source: Department of Meteorology, Annex 1 of the October to December 2026 forecast, 30-year averages for 1991 to 2020. These are whole-district averages, not a forecast for your dates. For the Galle weather station in the town itself, the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals give 344.5 mm in October, 282.6 mm in November and 175.9 mm in December (NOAA copy), so the Galle row above reads higher than the station.
Where should you go in Sri Lanka in October?
Pick by what you want to do, then keep one rain backup for each stop. No region is reliably dry in October, but the averages give you a useful lean.
| If you want | Lean towards | Why in October | Check before you go |
|---|---|---|---|
| A beach | The east (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) early in the month, or Tangalle in the deep south | Lower October averages than Galle | Sea state and local flags each day |
| Wildlife | Yala, scheduled from 16 October | Newswire reports Zones 1 and 2 were scheduled to reopen; Daily Mirror reports Zones 1 and 1A; no confirming report found | Entrance with your operator |
| Heritage | Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Dambulla | Mid-range October rain; mostly outdoor sites, so go early | Afternoon storm forecast |
| Tea country | Nuwara Eliya and Ella | Green and scenic, but 266 to 374 mm averages | Landslide warnings before road days |
| A city stop | Colombo and Galle Fort | Easy to shelter; Galle is one of the wettest districts in October | Rough-sea advisories if you plan a boat |
- Cultural Triangle. Anuradhapura (219.0 mm) and Matale, the district for Sigiriya and Dambulla (254.2 mm), sit in the middle of the table. Climb Sigiriya early and save the Dambulla cave temple for a wetter afternoon.
- Hill country. Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella are all green in October, but heavy falls are forecast for the Central Province on some days, including 15 October. Check the Disaster Management Centre's warnings before a mountain drive.
- Beaches. See the next section: the east and the deep south lean drier in October, and the south-west turns the corner later.
October sits in the second inter-monsoon. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains what that means and how to reroute.
Should you pick the south coast or the east coast in October?
October is the changeover month, so it depends on your dates. The east coast's main season is ending: Sri Lanka Tourism's weather page names Trincomalee and Arugam Bay as the places to go during the south-west monsoon, May to September. The south coast season is still ahead: Sri Lanka Tourism calls December to February the peak season on the south-west coast.
- First half of October: the east usually makes more sense for a beach. Trincomalee and Ampara average around 190 to 210 mm in October, but both jump to over 315 mm in November. Our Arugam Bay page covers the end of the surf season there.
- Second half of October: many travellers start shifting south. Tangalle, in Hambantota District, has the lowest October average in the table (188.7 mm). Galle and Matara are still wet in October, but drop to about 200 to 210 mm in December.
- Surf: Sri Lanka Tourism says that once the Arugam Bay season ends, the southern season begins at Hikkaduwa, Wewala and Narigama (Sri Lanka Tourism surfing page). It gives no start date, so match your level to the day's sea.
If you are heading south late in the month, our new south coast itinerary has 5, 7 and 10 day routes, and the east coast vs south coast guide compares the two by month.
Is Yala open in October 2026?
Scheduled from 16 October, per DWC on 13 October. We have not found a 16 October source confirming that the gates opened. Reports of which visitor areas reopen do not use the same names. Newswire on 13 October 2026 says Zones 1 and 2 reopen to tourists from 16 October, citing the Department of Wildlife Conservation. The Daily Mirror on 12 October 2026 quotes park authorities as saying Zones 1 and 1A reopen from 6 am, for local and foreign visitors. The Morning also reported the 16 October reopening on 13 October. The park has been closed since 14 September because of severe dry weather, and the closure also let the park repair its roads.
Reservations for bungalows and campsites inside the park open from 1 November 2026. On 16 October we still have no post-opening confirmation, so treat access as scheduled and confirm with the DWC or your operator before you pay for a jeep. Full details, including permits, are on our Yala National Park page.
Are the hill-country trains running in October?
Not at the moment. There is still no train from Kandy to Ella, and all trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola have been suspended since midnight at the end of 25 October 2026 until further notice, with no restart date given. On 15 October 2026 the Sri Lanka Railways media notices page still showed no new Upcountry line notice since June 2026 (railway.gov.lk notices). The latest news reports say:
- Reported running on 2 October 2026: Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola, Nawalapitiya to Hatton, and Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla (Colombo Times, 2 October 2026). That report is now out of date for Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola: Newswire and the Daily Mirror report that all trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola are suspended from midnight at the end of 25 October until further notice, after a landslide became active near Kadigamuwa Railway Station (Newswire, 25 October 2026; Daily Mirror, 25 October 2026). No restart date has been given.
- Closed: Peradeniya to Kandy, until the Peradeniya "Black Bridge" is restored, and the Gampola to Nawalapitiya and Hatton to Nanu Oya sections, which are still under repair.
So the famous Ella stretch (Nanu Oya to Ella) was reported running on 2 October, but you would have to reach Nanu Oya by road first, and you should check it before you travel. Our Kandy to Ella train guide tracks each section, the Nanu Oya to Ella train guide covers booking, and Kandy to Ella by road covers the drive. Rain can stop hill trains at short notice, so ask at the station on the day. On 21 October 2026, for example, an earth slip near Kadigamuwa stopped the 3.35 pm trains from Colombo Fort at Rambukkana, short of Peradeniya and Gampola (Daily Mirror; Ada Derana). It happened again on the morning and evening of 22 October (Daily Mirror).
On 24 and 25 October 2026, Sri Lanka Railways has suspended all trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola, after a landslide near Kadigamuwa Railway Station put soil on the line. Emergency repairs are planned for both days, and people with reserved seats for those days can get a full refund at any railway station (Daily Mirror, Newswire, Hiru News, 23 October 2026). The 23 October reports gave only those two dates, and the suspension was later extended (see the 25 October sentences below). None of the reports we read mentions the Nanu Oya to Ella section, so check before you travel. See the Colombo to Kandy train guide for the latest. Checked on 24 October 2026. On the evening of 25 October 2026 the Railways Department extended the suspension: all trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola are off from midnight at the end of 25 October until further notice, with no restart date given (Newswire, 25 October 2026, Daily Mirror, 25 October 2026). Checked again on 26 October 2026: the newest reports we found are the ones from 25 October, including a Hiru News report of the Railways Department statement, and none of them gives a restart date.
Can you go whale watching in Sri Lanka in October?
October is outside the southern season. The Sri Lanka Navy says its cruises are scheduled from Galle from November to April, and from Trincomalee from May to October. On 17 October 2026 the Navy's whale-watching site listed that seasonal calendar and did not mention a pause. Confirm sailings for your date on that site. When its southern cruise runs, the Navy lists US$80 for a foreign adult, including US$20 tax (Navy schedule page).
Private boats in Mirissa set their own dates. Ask whether they are sailing, what happens if the trip is cancelled for weather, and how they follow the whale-watching rules. Sightings are never guaranteed. Our whale watching guide compares Mirissa and Trincomalee month by month.
Is the India to Sri Lanka ferry running in October?
It was, with no pause announced, when we checked on 15 October 2026. The Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai ferry has stopped for the north-east monsoon every year since it restarted, and in 2025 the last sailings were in late October. On 15 October 2026 we found no suspension notice on the operator's booking site, sailsubham.com, and no news report of a 2026 pause date. If you plan to sail from late October, search your exact date on the operator's site and keep a flight as a backup. Our India to Sri Lanka ferry guide has the history, baggage rules and booking steps.
What holidays fall in Sri Lanka in October 2026?
One: Vap Full Moon Poya Day on Sunday 25 October 2026. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka lists it as a bank and public holiday (CBSL bank holidays 2026). Plan bank and government errands around it. The same CBSL 2026 list puts Deepawali Festival Day on Sunday 8 November and Ill Full Moon Poya Day on Tuesday 24 November. The festival calendar guide explains how to check events, and what to wear in Sri Lanka covers temple dress.
How should you plan a route in October?
- Do the big outdoor sight in the morning. The forecast pattern this month is showers or storms after about 1 pm, so climb, hike or safari early.
- Keep one spare day for every four or five days of travel. A washed-out afternoon then costs you nothing.
- Do not stack a long drive and a fixed activity on one day. Landslides and floods can slow hill roads.
- Check two things the night before: the Department of Meteorology forecast and the Disaster Management Centre's warnings, including rough-sea advisories if you plan a boat. On 14 October an amber rough-sea advisory covered the sea from Negombo to Galle.
- Book flexible beach nights. Sea state changes day by day in the inter-monsoon.
- Still choosing dates? The best time to visit guide shows every month, and Sri Lanka in November covers the next month.
Frequently asked questions
Is October a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, if you keep your plans flexible. October is in the second inter-monsoon, when afternoon or evening thunderstorms can happen anywhere on the island. On 2 October 2026 the Department of Meteorology forecast slightly above-normal rain for most of the country in October 2026. On 26 October 2026 it said the Bay of Bengal system had become a deep depression and is not expected to hit Sri Lanka directly, but rain in the south-west is expected to increase over the next few days, so keep a spare day and check the forecast for each stop.
Does it rain a lot in Sri Lanka in October?
It depends on the district. The Department of Meteorology's 1991 to 2020 averages put October rain at about 380 to 440 mm in Colombo, Kalutara, Galle and Kegalle, but under 200 mm in Hambantota (188.7 mm), Ampara (192.8 mm) and Mannar (183.3 mm). Storms in this season tend to come in the afternoon or evening.
Is October a good time for the south coast?
It is the shoulder month. Galle District averages 396.8 mm of rain in October, falling to 209.5 mm in December (Department of Meteorology district averages, 1991 to 2020, same annex). The Galle weather station is drier, at 344.5 mm in October and 175.9 mm in December (WMO 1991 to 2020 normals). The Sri Lanka Navy's southern whale cruises are scheduled from November. Late October can work for a flexible beach stay, but book refundable nights and check sea conditions daily.
What is the east coast like in October?
It is the tail end of the east coast's main season. Sri Lanka Tourism names Trincomalee and Arugam Bay as places for the May to September monsoon. On the long-term averages, Trincomalee (205.8 mm) and Ampara (192.8 mm) are drier than Galle in October, but both get much wetter in November and December.
Is Yala open in October 2026?
Visitor areas were scheduled to reopen from 6 am on 16 October 2026 after a dry-weather closure that began on 14 September, per DWC on 13 October. Newswire (13 October) reports Zones 1 and 2; Daily Mirror and Daily FT name Zones 1 and 1A. We have not found a 16 October source confirming the gates opened. Bungalow and campsite reservations open from 1 November.
Is the Kandy to Ella train running in October 2026?
No through train runs as of 15 October 2026. Normally, trains run from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola, and from Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla, but Peradeniya to Kandy, Gampola to Nawalapitiya and Hatton to Nanu Oya are still closed for repairs. On 24 and 25 October 2026, all trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola are also suspended after a landslide near Kadigamuwa. On the evening of 25 October the Railways Department extended the suspension from midnight at the end of 25 October until further notice, with no restart date given.
Can you go whale watching in Sri Lanka in October?
Not reliably. October is outside the southern season. On 17 October 2026 the Navy's whale-watching site listed southern cruises from Galle from November to April and Trincomalee cruises from May to October, and did not mention a pause. Confirm sailings for your date on that site.
Is October or November better for Sri Lanka?
Neither is dry. Both are in the second inter-monsoon. November is wetter in most districts on the long-term averages, and the Department of Meteorology forecasts above-normal November 2026 rain. October is better for the east and the deep south; November is the start of the south coast whale season.
