Kandy to Ella by Road

With no Kandy to Ella train running (checked 26 October 2026), go by road: a hired car or taxi, a bus, or road to Nanu Oya then the open Nanu Oya–Ella train. Official bus fare checked.

How do you get from Kandy to Ella by road? (Checked 26 October 2026)

Go by road, because no train runs between Kandy and Ella. As of 26 October 2026 no through train runs between Kandy and Ella. On 25 October 2026 the Railways Department suspended all trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola from midnight at the end of 25 October until further notice, because of a landslide near Kadigamuwa Railway Station, and gave no restart date (Newswire, 25 October 2026, Daily Mirror, 25 October 2026). As of 19 October 2026 trains between Peradeniya and Kandy were suspended, and the Gampola–Nawalapitiya and Hatton–Nanu Oya sections are still being repaired (Nawalapitiya–Hatton is operating) (Colombo Times, 2 October 2026; our Kandy to Ella train status). You have three workable options:

  1. Hired car or taxi all the way. The most flexible option and the easiest with luggage. There is no official fare, so get a written quote.
  2. Public bus. The cheapest option. The National Transport Commission's inter-provincial fare table lists route 21 Kandy–Badulla at Rs 590 (normal) and Rs 885 (semi-luxury) for the full route, effective 6 July 2026 (NTC fare table). Ella is not an end point on that route, so confirm the stop or the change.
  3. Road to Nanu Oya, then the train to Ella. This keeps the famous hill-country rail section, which Sri Lanka Railways reopened from 20 June 2026. See the Nanu Oya to Ella timetable.

We found no official published drive time for this route. On 23 October 2026 the OpenStreetMap route (OSRM) from Kandy to Ella was about 134 km and 2 hours 41 minutes with no traffic; that is not an official figure, and hill roads in rain take longer. Kandy to Nanu Oya is about 80 km and 1 hour 39 minutes on the same routing. Before travelling in rain, check the current landslide early warnings from the NBRO, published on the Disaster Management Centre site.

Can you take a bus from Kandy to Ella?

Yes, but plan the connection. The NTC's inter-provincial table, in force from 00:01 on 6 July 2026, names route 21 as Kandy–Badulla and gives the end-to-end fares above. The table does not say which route 21 departures stop there.

Before you go:

  • Search the NTC bus timetable and the NTC fare pages for current information.
  • Ask at Kandy bus station whether the departure stops at Ella or whether you need to change.
  • Allow plenty of margin and keep valuables with you. Big luggage is hard work on a crowded bus.

How does a private car or taxi work on this route?

A car and driver is the simplest door-to-door option, and the only one that lets you stop at tea estates or viewpoints on your own schedule. Prices are set privately, not by any authority, so this page publishes none. Before you agree a price, confirm:

  • the pickup address in Kandy and the drop-off address in Ella;
  • the vehicle type and luggage space;
  • which stops are included and how long the driver will wait;
  • the payment method, and whether tolls or parking are extra;
  • what happens if a road is blocked and the route changes.

The getting-around guide has a fuller checklist for hiring road transport.

How do you combine the road with the Nanu Oya–Ella train?

This is the best option if the train ride is the point of the trip. Travel by road from Kandy to Nanu Oya, the railway station for Nuwara Eliya, then take the train to Ella.

Sri Lanka Railways' notice of 18 June 2026 says trains from Badulla run back to Nanu Oya from 20 June 2026, with first-class (air-conditioned) and second-class reserved seats bookable on the official reservation site or at stations with reservation facilities (Sri Lanka Railways notice). Our Nanu Oya to Ella timetable page lists the published departures. Times change, so confirm at the station or on 1971.

A common way to do it: a driver takes you and your luggage from Kandy to Nanu Oya, then meets you in Ella, so you ride the train with only a day bag. Agree in advance what happens if the train is late or cancelled.

Is the Kandy to Ella road affected by landslides?

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) issues landslide early warnings for hill-country divisions on the Kandy to Ella road during heavy rain. Check the latest warning on the DMC site, which publishes NBRO warnings before you travel, and avoid hill roads in heavy rain.

On 18 October 2026 the National Building Research Organisation issued a warning valid from 6 pm that day to 6 pm on 19 October. It put the Hanguranketha, Mathurata, Walapane and Nildandahinna divisions of Nuwara Eliya District at Level 2 (Amber). The Haputale, Haldumulla and Passara divisions of Badulla District, Ambagamuwa in Nuwara Eliya District, and twelve divisions of Kandy District, including Yatinuwara, Udunuwara and Udapalatha, were at Level 1 (Yellow). Ella was not on that list (landslide early warning, 18 October 2026).

Checked 23 October 2026. The NBRO landslide bulletin valid from 10 pm on 21 October to 10 pm on 22 October 2026, published by the Disaster Management Centre, raised Ambagamuwa and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya District, and Udapalatha, Medadumbara and Kundasale in Kandy District, to Level 2. Level 1 covered Passara, Uva Paranagama, Hali Ela, Haputale and Haldumulla in Badulla District; Doluwa, Deltota, Yatinuwara, Ududumbara and Udunuwara in Kandy District; and Hanguranketha, Kotmale East, Kotmale West, Nildandahinna, Walapane and Mathurata in Nuwara Eliya District (NBRO bulletin, 21 October 2026). A Disaster Management Centre letter at 4 pm on 22 October referred to a new NBRO notice for the next 24 hours, but the letter itself does not list the divisions (DMC letter, 22 October 2026), so check the reports page for the current list.

Checked on the evening of 26 October 2026. NBRO's landslide early warning issued at 6 pm on 26 October 2026 (message ID LEWM-26-10-2026-1800-33, the 33rd update), valid until 6 pm on 27 October, replaces its 2.45 pm notice. It puts Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya District at Level 3 (Red), the highest of its three levels. It puts Kothmale West and Kotmale East in Nuwara Eliya District, and Pasbage Korale, Udunuwara, Ganga Ihala Korale, Udapalatha and Yatinuwara in Kandy District, at Level 2 (Amber). It puts Nuwara Eliya and Thalawakele in Nuwara Eliya District, and Doluwa, Hatharaliyadda, Thumpane, Gangawata Korale, Udadumbara, Akurana, Kundasale and Medadumbara in Kandy District, at Level 1 (Yellow), among the districts on this road. No division of Badulla District is listed, and Ella is not on the list (NBRO landslide early warning, 6 pm, PDF). The Irrigation Department also issued a minor flood warning at 11.30 a.m. on 26 October, valid until 11.30 a.m. on 27 October, for low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River in the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat Division, and asked motorists on roads through those areas to take extreme caution (Newswire, 26 October 2026). Stay vigilant, and check the latest NBRO notice and local authorities. Warnings change daily in the rain, so check the reports page on the day you travel.

Update, evening of 27 October 2026: NBRO's next landslide early warning, issued at 4 pm on 27 October 2026 (message ID LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, the 34th update) and valid until 4 pm on 28 October, replaces the 6 pm notice of 26 October, which has expired. It again puts Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya District at Level 3 (Red). It puts Kothmale West and Kotmale East in Nuwara Eliya District, and Pasbage Korale, Udunuwara, Ganga Ihala Korale, Udapalatha and Yatinuwara in Kandy District, at Level 2 (Amber), and Nuwara Eliya and Thalawakele, and Doluwa, Hatharaliyadda, Thumpane, Gangawata Korale, Udadumbara, Akurana, Kundasale and Medadumbara in Kandy District, at Level 1 (Yellow). No division of Badulla District is listed, and Ella is not on the list (NBRO landslide early warning, 4 pm on 27 October, PDF). Warnings change daily, so check the latest notice on the Disaster Management Centre list and follow local authorities before you travel.

Coming from the coast instead? Our Mirissa to Ella transport guide has road times from each beach town, and Wellawaya is the last town below Ella on that road.

These warnings are updated often. Check the latest one the day before you travel, and ask your driver or the bus station about road closures.

22 to 23 October 2026. The Disaster Management Centre asked travellers to reconsider planned trips to the central hills and other rain-affected areas, and to call 117 for road and weather updates before travelling (Daily Mirror, 22 October). That is not a statement that this road is closed. Recheck 117 and the newest NBRO bulletin on the morning you leave.

When will the train replace the road again?

Not soon. No official date has been announced for Kandy to Ella trains. Engineers expect some repairs to finish in December 2026, and a railway engineer said Kandy services could resume by February if a damaged bridge is fixed quickly. Those are expectations, not a timetable. The Kandy to Ella train guide keeps the dated status log.
