Looking south through the Ella Gap, with green forested hills falling away to the lowlands towards the coast.

How do you get from the south coast to Ella?

Quick answer: Go by road. There is no train between the south coast and Ella, because the coast line and the hill country line only meet in Colombo. From Mirissa it is about 176 km and just under 3 hours of driving with no traffic. A private car is the simplest option, and there are NTC bus routes from Matara toward Badulla and Bandarawela.

How far is Ella from each south coast beach?

These are OpenStreetMap driving routes to Ella town, with no traffic, checked 23 October 2026:

FromDistance to EllaTime with no traffic
Tangalle138 km2 h 25 min
Matara168 km2 h 45 min
Mirissa176 km2 h 54 min
Weligama178 km2 h 51 min
Unawatuna198 km3 h 5 min
Galle Fort199 km3 h 7 min
Tissamaharama89 km1 h 41 min

Tangalle saves about 38 km on Mirissa. If you are planning the whole loop, our hill country and south coast 8-day itinerary has every leg.

Is there a train from Mirissa or Galle to Ella?

No. The Sri Lanka Railways fare table shows the coast line running south from Colombo Fort to Matara and Beliatta. Ella is on the Main Line, 271.59 km from Colombo Fort through the hills. To go by train you would have to go back to Colombo and then up the Main Line, which is not a practical route.

The Main Line has also been disrupted in 2026. Before planning any rail leg in the hills, check our Kandy to Ella train status and Nanu Oya to Ella train guide.

Can you take a bus from the south coast to Ella?

The NTC fare lists, effective 6 July 2026, include these routes from the south and towards the hills:

NTC routeFrom and toFare
31-2Matara to BadullaRs 989
31Matara to BandarawelaRs 930
31-1Matara to Nuwara EliyaRs 1,173 (normal), Rs 1,760 (semi-luxury)
32-7Galle to KataragamaRs 767
EX 1-74/31-2Makumbura to Badulla (expressway)Rs 2,700

The NTC lists give the start and end of each route, not the stops in between. Ella is between the coast and Badulla, but ask the conductor at Matara whether your bus goes through Ella before you board. Buses are cheap but slow on the hill roads, and you have to carry your own bags on and off.

When is the best time to make the trip?

The coast and the hills have different dry seasons. These are WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Galle (coast) and Badulla (the nearest station to Ella):

MonthGalle rain (mm)Badulla rain (mm)

February and March are fairly dry at both. October and November are wet at both, so allow extra time on hill roads, and check landslide warnings from the Disaster Management Centre. Our Kandy to Ella by road guide explains how to read those warnings.

What should you sort out before you leave the coast?

  • Book the car the day before and agree the price and stops in writing.
  • Leave early. Hill roads are slower than the OSRM times, and afternoon rain is common in the wet months.
  • Carry cash for bus fares, Buduruwagala tickets and snacks on the way.
  • Plan the return. If you are flying out, Ella to Colombo airport is a long day. Our getting around guide compares the options.
