Yala National Park

Yala recorded the highest national-park visitation in Sri Lanka's official 2025 dataset, making route fit and visitor pressure central planning questions.

Deep South & Safari Country · Last verified 2026-08-28

Yala recorded 772,764 visits in 2025, the highest total in the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority's national-park dataset. That popularity makes visitor pressure, entrance and block choice, and current permit information more useful planning facts than a promise about which animals will appear.

What the official visitor data shows

The 2025 total comprised 346,229 domestic and 426,535 foreign visits. A separate SLTDA visitor-management report documents serious congestion during high season, sometimes involving up to 500 jeeps in the park at once, concentrated mainly in Block 1.

Annual totals do not predict the number of vehicles on one drive. They do establish that Yala carries substantially more visitor pressure than the other parks listed in the same official dataset.

Permits and current checks

The Department of Wildlife Conservation states that visitors enter national parks under a permit and prescribed conditions. Its day-visitor ePermit instructions require the visit date, park, group and vehicle details, followed by payment and presentation of the receipt at the entrance.

Before booking transport or a safari, confirm:

  1. the intended entrance and block;
  2. current opening or access notices;
  3. the permit and fee process;
  4. door-to-door travel time from the bases before and after Yala; and
  5. how the driver handles crowded sightings and animal movement.

What a Yala page cannot promise

Neither visitor statistics nor a species list can guarantee a leopard, elephant or any other sighting during one drive. Current access, vehicle concentrations and wildlife conditions need a fresh check. If you are also considering Udawalawe, use the Yala or Udawalawe comparison rather than treating either park's marketing claims as a forecast.
