Sri Lanka in October or November

October or November for Sri Lanka: shoulder-season compare for west, south and east coasts with honest rain using Met and DMC dated sources. Pick-October-if and pick-November-if matrix. Hill warning notes updated 26 October 2026.

Should you visit Sri Lanka in October or November?

Quick answer: Choose based on risk tolerance, not on a promise of dry weather. Both months sit in the second inter-monsoon, when afternoon or evening storms can appear across the island. October can be the better shoulder pick for the east and deep south on long-term averages. November is wetter in many districts and starts the southern whale-watching calendar. This page compares them. It does not replace Sri Lanka in October or Sri Lanka in November.

What the second inter-monsoon means in plain words

Sri Lanka Tourism describes October and November as a time of occasional heavy showers across the island, with seas that can be rough and highlands that look lush. The Department of Meteorology treats the second inter-monsoon as generally wetter than the first, with convective rain that can fall in the afternoon or evening anywhere.

That is why neither month gets a "best beach in Sri Lanka" slogan on this site without caveats. Compare named stops, not whole coasts, and keep a spare day for the activity you cannot miss.

Rain: honest numbers and 2026 context

Long-term averages on our month guides show heavy October totals on many south-west stations (examples in the October guide annex include roughly 380 to 440 mm in parts of Colombo, Kalutara, Galle and Kegalle districts) while some deep-south and eastern stations are comparatively lower in October. November district averages summarised on the November guide still sit high across the board, with examples from about 240 mm (Puttalam) to about 394 mm (Ratnapura), including about 350 mm in Colombo and about 335 mm in Trincomalee.

For 2026 specifically, the early October Met outlook materials used on our October page pointed to slightly above-normal October rain for most of the country and an increased likelihood of above-normal November rain. That is a seasonal signal, not your Tuesday afternoon forecast. On the days around 22 to 23 October 2026, public notices also covered reservoir spill risk, river flood attention on Kalu Ganga and Deduru Oya, and hill landslide warnings. If you are travelling in the next week, read the newest Met and DMC PDFs the morning you drive.

West and south vs east

West and south: storms do not cancel a trip, but they change the day plan. Mornings are often more usable than late afternoons. Beach hours may shrink. Expressway and city floods can delay airport runs.

East: October is closer to the end of the period Sri Lanka Tourism associates with east-coast monsoon travel. November deepens island-wide inter-monsoon wetness and is a weaker default for a pure Arugam Bay beach holiday. See east coast vs south coast before you force an east-heavy route into November.

Whales, parks and other "is it open?" checks

  • Whales: October is outside the reliable southern season. November starts the Navy's November to April Galle schedule. Confirm the ship is actually operating; the homepage showed a maintenance pause when checked on 23 October 2026.
  • Yala: Mid-October 2026 reporting on our October guide described a scheduled visitor-area reopening after a dry-weather closure, with reservation language for bungalows and campsites from 1 November. Verify on the Yala page before paying.
  • Hill trains and roads: Rain raises earth-slip risk. Treat rail notices and DMC landslide bulletins as mandatory reading, not optional colour. As an example, Sri Lanka Railways suspended all trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola on 24 and 25 October 2026 after a landslide near Kadigamuwa, with emergency repairs and full refunds for reserved seats (Daily Mirror, 23 October). On the evening of 25 October 2026 the Railways Department extended the suspension: all trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola are off from midnight at the end of 25 October until further notice, with no restart date given (Newswire, 25 October 2026, Daily Mirror, 25 October 2026). See our Colombo to Kandy train guide for the latest.

Public holidays that affect November 2026

Our November guide records Deepawali Festival Day on Sunday 8 November 2026 and Ill Full Moon Poya Day on Tuesday 24 November 2026 on the Central Bank 2026 list. Holiday eves can fill coastal hotels even in wet months. October holiday detail stays on the October page.

Checked-on weather note for readers travelling now

If you are reading this in late October 2026 with tickets already bought: keep hill drives flexible, save 117 for road condition questions flagged by DMC messaging, watch coastal wind warnings before boat trips, and do not treat a single sunny morning in Colombo as proof that Nuwara Eliya passes are fine. Rebuild the day each morning from official bulletins.

Update, 24 October 2026: The Department of Meteorology said on 23 October that rain will continue in the south-west until 27 October. A low-pressure area near the North Andaman Islands is forecast to become a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of 26 October. The Department does not expect it to hit Sri Lanka directly, but wind patterns linked to it are expected to bring more rain to the south-west (Colombo Tribune, 23 October). The landslide warning valid from 4 pm on 23 October to 4 pm on 24 October put parts of Kegalle (Mawanella, Dehiowita, Aranayake, Ruwanwella and Deraniyagala), Nuwara Eliya (Norwood and Ambagamuwa) and Ratnapura (Ratnapura, Elapatha and Kuruwita) at Level 2 (Amber). No area was at Level 3 (Red) (NBRO warning, PDF). That warning ends at 4 pm on 24 October, so open the newest one before a hill drive.

Update, evening of 26 October 2026: NBRO's landslide early warning issued at 6 pm on 26 October (message ID LEWM-26-10-2026-1800-33, the 33rd update), valid until 6 pm on 27 October, puts Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya District at Level 3 (Red), the highest of its three levels. It also puts six divisions of Ratnapura District at Level 3 (Red): Kuruwita, Elapatha, Ayagama, Openayake, Pelmadulla and Ratnapura, and Bulathsinhala and Dodangoda in Kalutara District. Rambukkana and Yatiyanthota in Kegalle District are at Level 2 (Amber) (NBRO landslide early warning, 6 pm, PDF). Newswire reported that all schools across Sri Lanka will be closed on Tuesday 27 October as a precaution because of the weather, and that the closure applies only to that day (Newswire, 26 October 2026). NewsWire reported that heavy rainfall is forecast across Sri Lanka on 26, 27 and 28 October (NewsWire on X, 26 October 2026). Stay vigilant, and check the latest NBRO notice and local authorities. That warning ended at 6 pm on 27 October.

Update, evening of 27 October 2026: NBRO's next landslide early warning, issued at 4 pm on 27 October 2026 (message ID LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, the 34th update) and valid until 4 pm on 28 October, replaces the 6 pm notice of 26 October, which has expired. It again puts Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya District, Kuruwita, Elapatha, Ayagama, Openayake, Pelmadulla and Ratnapura in Ratnapura District, and Bulathsinhala and Dodangoda in Kalutara District at Level 3 (Red), and Rambukkana and Yatiyanthota in Kegalle District at Level 2 (Amber) (NBRO landslide early warning, 4 pm on 27 October, PDF). Open the newest notice before a hill drive. Warnings change daily, so check the latest notice on the Disaster Management Centre list and follow local authorities before you travel.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. List your must-dos (whales, east surf, Yala, hills, wedding dates).
  2. Drop any must-do that fights the month (whales in early October; pure east beaches in a wet November week).
  3. Open the matching month guide for district tables.
  4. Book refundable stays for the first draft.
  5. Re-check Met and DMC three days before each long transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Is October or November better for Sri Lanka?

Neither is a dry-season guarantee. Both sit in the second inter-monsoon. On long-term averages November is wetter in many districts, and the Met Department's early October 2026 outlook flagged above-normal November rain for most of the country. October can still favour the east and deep south relative to the wettest south-west stations.

Does November get more rain than October in Sri Lanka?

Often yes on the 1991 to 2020 averages. Examples used on our month guides include Colombo around 350 mm in November versus much higher October totals on south-west stations in the Met annex, and November district averages spanning roughly 240 mm to 394 mm. Always check the live forecast for your week.

Can I go to the beach in October or November?

Yes with flexible plans. Seas can be rough in the second inter-monsoon according to Sri Lanka Tourism. Late October and November start the south-west peak framing that strengthens in December to February. Use our best beaches November to December guide for coast picks, and keep indoor backups.

Is whale watching possible in October or November?

October is outside the reliable southern season. November begins the Sri Lanka Navy's November to April Galle window. Confirm sailings on whalewatching.navy.lk; when checked on 23 October 2026 the site also showed a maintenance pause message.

Are landslides a concern in October and November?

They can be during heavy rain. On 22 to 23 October 2026, Newsfirst reported landslide warnings still in effect for parts of Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura, and Daily Mirror reported DMC advice to reconsider hill excursions and to call 117 for road conditions. The NBRO warning issued at 4 pm on 27 October, valid until 4 pm on 28 October, puts Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya District, six divisions of Ratnapura District, and Bulathsinhala and Dodangoda in Kalutara District at Level 3 (Red). Trains between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola were suspended on 24 and 25 October after a landslide near Kadigamuwa. On the evening of 25 October the Railways Department extended the suspension from midnight at the end of 25 October until further notice, with no restart date given. Check the newest DMC bulletin before hill drives.

Is Yala better in October or November 2026?

Visitor-area timing in mid-October 2026 was linked to a scheduled reopening after a dry-weather closure, with bungalow and campsite reservations described from 1 November on sources used by our October guide. Confirm live park notices before you pay for a safari night in either month.

Should I choose the east coast in October or November?

October is closer to the tail of the east's main season framing than November. November stays wet on many eastern averages and sits deeper in the second inter-monsoon. If the east is essential, prefer earlier in the shoulder and keep spare days.

What is the honest advice for first-timers in these months?

Book refundable nights, plan short drives, keep a spare day, and do not treat social media drought photos as a forecast. Read the October and November month guides, then the planning checklist, before you lock a hill-heavy route.
