How do you get from Mirissa to Galle?
Quick answer: The two towns are about 34 km apart by road, roughly 39 minutes with no traffic, and the coast line train links them at 33.67 km on the railway's own distance table. The train and the bus both follow the same coast. A tuk-tuk or taxi is door to door. We found no published fare for the Mirissa to Galle leg, so check the price on the day.
This page covers only the short hop. For the stretch from Colombo, read our Colombo to Galle train guide. To choose which base suits you, see Weligama vs Mirissa vs Tangalle and Galle vs Unawatuna. If you are starting from Unawatuna, see our Unawatuna to Mirissa guide, and for Weligama see our Weligama to Mirissa guide.

Is there a train from Mirissa to Galle?
Yes. Galle and Mirissa both have stations on the coast line, and Unawatuna and Weligama sit between them. The railway runs a reservation system, but we could not load the railway's website on 24 October 2026, so we cannot give departure times. Treat any time you hear as unconfirmed until you see it at the station.
What we can say from the railway's own guide, as read on our Colombo to Galle train guide:
- Seats on trains that offer reservations can be booked at seatreservation.railway.gov.lk up to 30 days ahead, for up to 5 passengers at a time.
- You collect the ticket at a station with a reservation counter. On this line the guide lists counters at Colombo Fort, Galle, Matara and Beliatta, among others.
- If no train shows on the booking site, the seats may be sold out, the date may be too far ahead, or that pair of stations may not take reservations. Some seats may still be sold at counters.
We do not know how full the trains are on a given day, so we do not promise a seat. Our train booking and prices guide explains classes.
How much is the train from Mirissa to Galle?
We found no published Mirissa to Galle fare. The fare table we read lists fares from Colombo Fort only:
| Station | Distance from Colombo Fort | 1st class | 2nd class | 3rd class |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galle | 113.89 km | Rs 950 | Rs 500 | Rs 240 |
| Unawatuna | 119.53 km | Rs 950 | Rs 500 | Rs 240 |
| Weligama | 142.83 km | Rs 1,100 | Rs 550 | Rs 280 |
| Mirissa | 147.56 km | Rs 1,100 | Rs 550 | Rs 280 |
| Matara | 156.82 km | Rs 1,150 | Rs 600 | Rs 300 |
Do not work out the short fare by subtracting one row from another, because the table does not say how short-hop fares are set. Ask for the Mirissa to Galle fare at the counter before you buy, and check which class you are asking about.
Is there a bus from Mirissa to Galle?
Mirissa is on the coast road between Galle and Matara, as our Mirissa guide describes it. What we could not source is a Mirissa to Galle bus fare, timetable or stop.
The National Transport Commission inter-provincial fare table effective 6 July 2026 lists routes by their start and end towns. We read these relevant rows:
| NTC route | From and to | Service | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Colombo to Matara | Normal / semi-luxury / air-conditioned | Rs 681 / Rs 1,022 / Rs 1,320 |
| 2-1 | Colombo to Galle | Normal / air-conditioned | Rs 496 / Rs 970 |
These are long routes. They do not give a stage fare for Mirissa to Galle, and we could not read the NTC stage fare table. Ask the conductor for the fare before you pay, and confirm the bus goes to Galle town and not to a junction.
If you plan a bus, ask your guesthouse which service to take and where in Mirissa it stops. We do not publish a stop location, because we found no official source.
Should you take a tuk-tuk or a taxi?
A tuk-tuk or taxi is the simplest option with luggage. We found no official tariff, so we give no price. Things to settle before you set off:
- The total price, in rupees, and whether it is for the vehicle or per person.
- The exact pickup and drop-off points, such as a guesthouse in Mirissa and a gate or hotel in Galle.
- Whether the driver will stop for a short break, and whether any waiting time is extra.
- Whether you will pay in cash, and whether the driver has change.
At 34 km, a tuk-tuk is open to the weather and slow on a long ride. A car with a driver is a better fit for a heavy bag. If you are visiting Galle Fort, ask where the driver can stop, because we have not verified vehicle access rules at the Fort gate.
Which option is best?
| If you want | Pick | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| The simplest door to door ride | Taxi or tuk-tuk | No official tariff, so agree the price first |
| A coast view and a fixed rail distance | Train | We could not confirm times, so check at the station |
| The cheapest likely option | Bus | No fare source, ask the conductor |
| Luggage and a fixed pickup | Private car | Agree the price in writing |
We do not compare these by price, because we have no sourced price for the short leg.
What is the best time of day to go?
There is no official guidance we can cite, so our advice is general:
- Go in the morning if you want to walk Galle Fort in daylight and have time to return.
- Check the last train or bus back before you leave, not just the first one out.
- In the wet months, allow extra time. October is the wettest month at Galle, with 344.5 mm on the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals as read on our Colombo to Galle train guide.
- If you have a whale cruise booked, give the transfer a large buffer. The Sri Lanka Navy lists its southern cruises from Galle from November to April, as we read on 17 October 2026. Confirm the sailing for your date on the Navy site, and never assume a sighting.
Can you do Mirissa to Galle as a day trip?
Yes, by train, bus or car. Most of the effort is planning the return. Decide before you go whether you will come back the same day, and whether your last transport home leaves before dark. Our Galle vs Unawatuna guide helps if you decide to stay near the Fort instead, and our Colombo, Galle and Mirissa weekend shows a two day plan using both places.
What about Galle to Mirissa for whale watching?
The Navy's southern whale cruises sail from Galle past Mirissa and Dondra Head from November to April, so a Galle cruise does not need a transfer to Mirissa. Private boats are a different option, and our Mirissa guide describes the harbour and the season. See our whale watching guide for how to choose. We do not recommend a boat operator.
What should you check on the day?
- Train times. Ask at the station. We have no confirmed times.
- Fare. Ask the counter or conductor for the Mirissa to Galle fare.
- Weather. Rain and the monsoon can slow roads and trains.
- Pickup. Confirm exactly where a taxi or tuk-tuk will meet you.
- Return. Know the last service back.
- Cash. Carry small notes for buses and tuk-tuks.
For the rest of the coast, see our Galle destination page, Unawatuna and Weligama.

Mirissa is on the coast road between Galle and Matara, but we found no published Mirissa to Galle bus fare or timetable. The National Transport Commission fare table we read lists long routes that start or end at Colombo, Matara or Galle, not this short stage. We found no official guidance on peak hours, so treat the no-traffic time as a minimum. A morning departure leaves room for a delay and for the Galle Fort walls in daylight. Can I do Mirissa to Galle as a day trip?
Yes, the distance allows it by train, bus or car, but the train timetable is not confirmed here. Plan the return before you go, because the last service of the day matters more than the first one. Our Galle versus Unawatuna guide helps choose where to stay near the Fort.
