Mirissa wins on whale watching, train access and things to do in the evening. Many private whale-watching boats leave from Mirissa harbour.
Tangalle wins on space and weather. On the long-term averages, the Hambantota side gets well under half the yearly rain of the Galle side, and Tangalle is about an hour from Udawalawe. The trade-off is a longer drive from the airport (about 2 h 47 min) and no train station.

Less rain does not always mean a calm sea. The south-west monsoon from May to September still brings big waves along the whole south coast, so check the sea every day before you swim.
Is Weligama or Mirissa better?
They are 5 km apart, so this is about where you sleep, not what you can do. The Southern Province tourist bureau describes Weligama's bay as calm, with beginner-friendly waves, and lists:
| What | Bureau detail (checked 22 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Surf lessons | 1 to 2 hours, USD 15 to 25 a session (tourist bureau, undated), best November to March |
| Taprobane Island | A private island, reachable on foot at low tide |
| Kushtarajagala statue | An 8th-century rock carving, free to visit |
| Stilt fishermen | Best seen at dawn or dusk |
Stay in Weligama if surfing is the main plan. Stay in Mirissa if you want to walk to the whale boats and the beach bars. Our Weligama page lists surf school prices, and our Mirissa page covers the whale boats.
