Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is a south-coast base associated with reef and surf activities. Choose it for a specific activity and date, not because an old seasonal range promises suitable water. Compare it with other south bases in the south coast hub, including Hiriketiya further east.

Is Hikkaduwa worth visiting?

Quick answer: Yes, for reef snorkelling, diving and surf on a lively stretch of the south-west coast. Hikkaduwa is about 115 km and 1 hour 47 minutes from Colombo by road and 19 km from Galle Fort. The Southern Province tourism site says surfing is best from November to April, which is also the drier half of the year here.

Choose the activity first

For surfing, match the exact break to current conditions and ability. For reef activity, verify whether access is open, what protected-area rules apply and whether sea conditions are suitable. Dry weather alone does not prove safe swimming, surf or visibility.

Decide between beach, reef and surf priorities

Hikkaduwa can support several coastal activities, but they do not share the same conditions or risk profile. Choose the primary purpose first. A surf session needs a suitable break and ability match; snorkelling needs confirmed reef access, visibility and safe water; a beach day still depends on the exact shoreline and current warnings.

Use the named beach page for water decisions

The Hikkaduwa Beach guide keeps marine and access checks close to the activity. Do not infer safe swimming from other people being in the water, and do not use a seasonal slogan as a substitute for the current marine forecast and local warning flags.

Plan a compact town stay

Hikkaduwa is most useful when the accommodation, chosen beach section and activity provider form a workable local plan. Verify road crossings and the distance to the exact entry point rather than relying on a town-wide “beachfront” label. If the trip is primarily about Galle's heritage, Galle may be the clearer base with Hikkaduwa as a separate outing.

Compare instruction and operator practice

Fit Hikkaduwa into the coast

Use the South Coast route to avoid collecting similar beach bases. One well-chosen base can be more useful than changing accommodation for every named town.

Just up the coast, Ambalangoda is about 13 km north for its carved masks, and the Kosgoda turtle project is about 14 minutes further.

What is there to see in Hikkaduwa?

The same site says the town was once a port for cinnamon exports. It lists the coral sanctuary as open daily from 7 am to 6 pm, with a charge for boat hire. It also lists entrance as free, but that page is not dated and we have not checked it against an official fee list, so check at the gate or ticket office before you pay for a boat or an entry ticket.

Can you dive or snorkel at Hikkaduwa?

Yes. The Southern Province tourism site says Hikkaduwa has several dive centres running trips to the reefs. Deeper sites can have groupers and moray eels, and wreck dives include the Conch Wreck. If you are not certified, it suggests a Discover Scuba Diving session in shallow water with a local dive shop. Glass-bottom boats are the dry option.

How do I get to Hikkaduwa?

Hikkaduwa is on the coast road between Colombo and Galle, so Colombo to Galle and Matara buses pass through. The NTC fare is for the full route, so the fare to Hikkaduwa is lower; ask the conductor. The Southern Province site says the bus from Colombo takes about 2 to 3 hours and that Hikkaduwa has its own railway station. Our bus routes and fares guide lists the expressway buses to Galle.

What is the weather like in Hikkaduwa?

Hikkaduwa has no WMO station, so we use Galle, about 19 km south. Average highs run from 29.0°C to 31.6°C, and lows from 23.4°C to 26.0°C.
