Ambalangoda

A coast town between Bentota and Hikkaduwa, known for its carved wooden masks. The three mask types, where to see them being made, train fares from Colombo, road times and the drier months, checked 22 October 2026.

Is Ambalangoda worth visiting?

Quick answer: Yes, for a half day if you like crafts and old traditions. Ambalangoda is the town Sri Lanka Tourism links most closely with the island's carved wooden masks, and you can see them on display and being made. It is on the coast road about 13 km north of Hikkaduwa, and the train from Colombo Fort costs Rs 750 or less.

Ambalangoda is in Galle District, in the Southern Province, on the stretch of coast between Bentota and Hikkaduwa. Most people pass through on the Galle Road or the coast railway. It is part of our south coast region.

What are Ambalangoda masks?

Sri Lanka Tourism says the mask tradition has been present in Sri Lanka for over two thousand years, and that Ambalangoda is where it lives on. It describes three kinds of mask:

Mask typeWhat Sri Lanka Tourism says it is forWhat to look for
SanniThe oldest type, tied to healing rituals. "Sanniya" means disease, and 18 masks each stand for an illnessBright reds and flames on fever masks; yellow and orange on others
KolamThe most popular type, used in folk theatre for entertainmentSatirical characters with exaggerated faces
RakshaUsed in ceremonies and processionsThe cobra demon and the peacock demon

In the sanni ritual, Sri Lanka Tourism explains, an exorcist calls up the demons thought to cause an illness, and the patient makes offerings until they "stop bothering" the patient. Kolam theatre grew from the same roots into a four-part play with a narrator and masked characters. It has slowly added human characters.

How are the masks made?

Sri Lanka Tourism gives the steps, which you can watch at a workshop:

  1. The carver uses wood from the kaduru (strychnine) tree, which is light and soft.
  2. He shapes the mask with a chisel and mallet.
  3. The rough mask is placed over a fireplace for about a week, which protects it from insects.
  4. It is painted pale yellow first, then the pattern for the character is added.
  5. The pigments are mixed with a resin so the colours last.

Where can you see masks in Ambalangoda?

Sri Lanka Tourism says there are two museums for the tradition. It describes the first as "a little dated", with part of its collection and some ritual costumes. The second, Ariyapala and Sons, is larger and explains how masks are made. Sri Lanka Tourism's list of authorised tourist shops includes Ariyapala Traditional Masks, No. 432, Galle Road, Ambalangoda (phone 091 225 4899 on that list).

Buying tip, from Sri Lanka Tourism: the cheapest souvenir masks are now made in factories, so if you want a mask cut by a craftsman, ask who carved it and be wary of fakes.
