Tangalle Surf Season: When Is the Swell and Is It Safe?
Tangalle's own beaches are shorebreak and not for surfing or casual swimming. The surf season is roughly November to March, and the rideable waves are 15 to 30 minutes away. Sources compared, month by month, with safety notes. Checked 24 October 2026.

When is the surf season in Tangalle, and can you surf there?
Quick answer: The Tangalle surf season is roughly November to March. But Tangalle's own beaches are a long shorebreak with strong currents, not a place to surf or to swim casually. People who surf from Tangalle drive 15 to 30 minutes west to Hiriketiya, Kudawella or Unakuruwa and sleep in Tangalle. Treat the sea here with respect: there are no patrolled lifeguards on the town beaches, and visitors have drowned on this coast.
Tangalle sits in the deep south, where the coast turns east. It does not have the bay-sheltered beginner waves of Weligama or the reefs of Ahangama. That is both the reason people choose it, for quiet and space, and the reason it is a poor place to learn on your own beach. Our Tangalle destination page covers the town. This guide covers the surf and the sea.
Is there surf in Tangalle itself?
Mostly no. Surf Atlas describes Tangalle Beach and the area as mostly a long shorebreak, facing south-south-east, with no point to shape the waves. Sessions Travel says Tangalle Beach itself has shorebreak rather than rideable waves. Visit Tangalle says Medaketiya and Tangalle Beach have deep, powerful shorebreaks and strong undertows that can turn dangerous for casual swimming and for surf lessons. Three sources, same answer.
The good news is that several breaks sit within a short drive. The table sets out what each source says. Drive times come from Sessions Travel and are not official.
| Break | What the sources say | Fits | Drive from Tangalle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tangalle Beach, Medaketiya | Long, heavy shorebreak and undertow | Not for lessons or casual swimming | In town |
| Goyambokka, Mawella | No surf of their own (Surf Atlas) | Swimming at sheltered Goyambokka only | Nearby |
| Unakuruwa | A right-hander, more exposed (Surf Atlas); mellow rights (Sessions) | Intermediates | About 10 minutes |
| Kudawella | Very easy whitewater, a surf school on site | Ultra-beginners, families | About 15 minutes |
| Hiriketiya | A beginner beach break and a reef; busy | Beginners to intermediates | 15 to 30 minutes |
The sources disagree on Hiriketiya's sides. Surf Atlas and Sessions Travel put the beginner beach break on the west and the reef on the east. Visit Tangalle puts a hollow left reef on the western headland. Our Hiriketiya page says the bay has a beginner beach break plus a left reef. Look at it from the sand and ask your instructor before you paddle out.
When is the Tangalle surf season, month by month?
The sources overlap on November to March. This is the comparison that matters, because it shows where they agree and where they do not.
| Source | Season it gives | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Surf Atlas (updated 14 Aug 2026) | November to March | Bigger, longer-period swell in November and December, flatter and gentler January to March |
| Sessions Travel (15 Mar 2026) | November to March peak | April is a shoulder month, May to October off-season |
| Visit Tangalle | November to April | Peak dry season |
| Sri Lanka Tourism | December to February peak on the south-west coast | Clear skies and calm seas |
Rain is not a surf forecast, but the nearest station with 1991 to 2020 normals is Hambantota, about 49 km east, and it shows how the year turns:
| Month | Rain (mm) | Rain days (1 mm+) | Surf season label |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 68.4 | 5.3 | Peak, gentler swell |
| February | 47.4 | 4.0 | Peak, gentler swell |
| March | 47.0 | 4.0 | Peak, gentler swell |
| April | 92.3 | 6.8 | Shoulder |
| May | 73.1 | 6.9 | Off-season |
| June | 41.2 | 5.6 | Off-season |
| July | 30.8 | 4.3 | Off-season |
| August | 59.4 | 6.3 | Off-season |
| September | 100.0 | 8.3 | Off-season |
| October | 128.5 | 10.1 | Transition, second inter-monsoon |
| November | 221.8 | 13.0 | Season begins, bigger swell |
| December | 132.1 | 9.4 | Peak, bigger swell |
Rain figures are from WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Hambantota (43497), via NOAA. Labels come from the sources above. Local rain does not explain sea state. The off-season is about the south-west monsoon winds and swell, which these rain figures do not capture. So do not read June or July as "dry therefore good". Our monsoon seasons guide explains the two monsoons.
One more point from Surf Atlas: winds pick up after about 10 am, so go early. Plan your surf for the morning and your lunch for the heat.
Which break should I choose, by level and month?
Use this as a decision rule, not a guarantee. We have no official wave data.
| If you are... | Choose | When | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| A first-timer | Kudawella or Hiriketiya's beach break, with a lesson | January to March | Gentler swell, beginner breaks |
| A beginner with a few lessons | Hiriketiya, early morning | January to March | Busy, so go early |
| An improver | Hiriketiya reef or Unakuruwa, with a local guide | November to December | Bigger, longer swell early in the season |
| Not surfing | Goyambokka for a swim | Any season, ask first | Sheltered cove |
Hiri Surf School's rates, as recorded on our Hiriketiya page on 14 October 2026, were LKR 5,000 for a group lesson, LKR 6,000 semi-private and LKR 8,000 private, for a 1 hour 15 minute session with softboard and leash. That is one school on one day. Weligama and Ahangama have many more schools, and Visit Tangalle says Weligama has hundreds of them. If lessons are the point of your trip, read our Weligama versus Mirissa versus Tangalle guide and the Ahangama page before you pick Tangalle as a base.
Is it safe to swim or surf near Tangalle?
Not on every beach, and not without local advice. What the sources say:
- The UK Foreign Office says many beaches in Sri Lanka have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year, and tells visitors to get advice from their hotel or tour operator before going in.
- Srilankatour.travel says Medaketiya, Medilla and Kapuhenwala shelve steeply into deep water and have dangerous currents in places. It says Silent Beach, at Godellawela, looks calm but has a serious rip, and that the coves at Pallikaduwa and Goyambokka are sheltered and are where most people swim. It says there are no patrolled lifeguards on these beaches. Its advice is to ask at your guesthouse that morning rather than judge from the sand.
- Newswire (Sri Lanka) reported on 28 August 2025 that police lifeguards rescued a 22-year-old French tourist swept away by a current at Medilla. So lifeguards are sometimes on duty, but do not count on it. Coverage changes by day and beach.
None of this is a reason to stay out of the water. It is a reason to choose where you go in. Use the sheltered coves for swimming, and use a surf school at a surf beach. Do not surf alone at a break you do not know. Our Sri Lanka safety guide covers wider safety, and the surfing guide has a list of checks to make before any paddle out.
One tip for rental boards. If you hire a board, photograph its condition first. Our Ahangama page records this advice from the US embassy, and it applies to any south coast shop.
What about May to October?
Plan on a different coast. Sessions Travel says the south-west monsoon shuts down south coast surf from May to October and sends surfers to Arugam Bay. Visit Tangalle says sheltered coves such as Hiriketiya can still give rideable inside waves during those months, but with higher rainfall and stronger onshore winds. Both sources may be right on different days. If you must surf the south in those months, go with a local school that checks the sea each morning, and read our Arugam Bay surf lessons and gear guide for the east coast option.
How should I plan a Tangalle surf stay?
Here is a sample three-day shape for the dry season. It is our suggestion, built from the source facts above.
- Day 1. Arrive, swim only where your hosts say is sheltered, and look at the sea from the sand. Ask your guesthouse which beaches they use that week.
- Day 2. Early start. Take a tuk-tuk or a driver to Hiriketiya or Kudawella and have a lesson before the wind picks up after about 10 am. Eat there and come back for the afternoon.
- Day 3. A rest or a second session. Visit the wider deep south or walk the harbour at dawn.
If you want a surf-first base, our Hiriketiya page and Weligama page show the alternatives.
What is the bottom line?
Tangalle is a good place to stay near surf and a poor place to surf from your doorstep. Go between November and March, expect bigger swell early in the season and gentler waves from January, and plan 15 to 30 minutes of transfer each way. Never treat the town beaches as swimming beaches. Check the sea with your guesthouse every morning, choose sheltered coves for swimming, and take a lesson at a surf beach.
For an evening off the board, the Rekawa turtle watch is about 15 minutes east of Tangalle.
Frequently asked questions
Is there surf in Tangalle?
Not on the town beaches. Surf Atlas describes Tangalle Beach and the area as mostly a long shorebreak, and Sessions Travel says it has shorebreak rather than rideable waves. People who surf from Tangalle drive 15 to 30 minutes to Hiriketiya, Kudawella or Unakuruwa.
When is the surf season in Tangalle?
Mostly November to March, the dry season on the south coast. Surf Atlas and Sessions Travel both give November to March, while Visit Tangalle says November to April. April is a shoulder month. Sources agree the south-west monsoon makes May to October a poor time.
Is Tangalle good for beginners to surf?
Tangalle is a good base but the waves are elsewhere. Beginners are sent to Hiriketiya's beach break or to Kudawella, which Surf Atlas calls very easy whitewater. Do not learn on Tangalle's own beaches, where the shorebreak and undertow are strong.
Is it safe to swim or surf at Tangalle?
Not everywhere. Srilankatour.travel says Medaketiya, Medilla and Kapuhenwala shelve steeply with dangerous currents, Silent Beach has a serious rip, and there are no patrolled lifeguards. The UK Foreign Office says to ask your hotel or tour operator before going in. Ask each morning.
Where do people surf near Tangalle?
Hiriketiya has a beginner beach break and a reef. Kudawella is an easy beach break with a surf school, per Sessions Travel. Unakuruwa is a right-hander that Surf Atlas calls more exposed. Goyambokka and Mawella have no surf of their own.
Can I surf in Tangalle from May to October?
Sources advise against planning on it. Sessions Travel says the south-west monsoon shuts down south coast surf from May to October, and suggests Arugam Bay instead. Visit Tangalle says sheltered coves such as Hiriketiya can still give rideable inside waves, so ask a local school on the day.
How much is a surf lesson near Tangalle?
On 14 October 2026 our Hiriketiya page recorded Hiri Surf School at LKR 5,000 for a group lesson, LKR 6,000 semi-private and LKR 8,000 private. That is one school, not a market rate. Ask what the price includes before you pay.
How far is Hiriketiya from Tangalle?
Sources give 15 to 20 minutes by road (Sessions Travel, Visit Tangalle) or 20 to 30 minutes (Surf Atlas). Visit Tangalle puts it at about 15 km. We have no official figure, so allow half an hour and agree the fare first.
