What is the weather in Ahangama in December?

Quick answer: December is the start of Ahangama's dry, warm, busy season. The nearest weather station, Galle, averages a daytime high of 29.9 C and a night low of 23.7 C in December, with 11.2 rain days (a rain day is 1 mm or more). That is drier than November and wetter than January. The south coast surf season is under way, so the sea is the draw, and the cost is crowds and higher room prices, especially from 20 December.

Ahangama has no weather station, so every weather number on this page comes from Galle, about 20 km along the coast. Both towns face the same sea. Treat the figures as a good guide, not an exact reading for the beach in front of you.

How wet is December compared with November and January?

Rain days fall quickly through the season. We show rain days, not millimetres, because they are easier to plan around. We also leave out Galle's monthly rainfall totals: the station record and the Department of Meteorology's district averages for the same place do not match, and we would rather publish nothing than a number we cannot stand behind.

A rain day here usually means a shower you can wait out, not a lost day. If you want the fewest wet days, our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains why January to March is the steadier stretch, and our December guide for the whole island compares the regions.

How hot is Ahangama in December?

Hot enough that your day needs a shape. The December average high at Galle is 29.9 C, the average low is 23.7 C and the monthly mean is 26.8 C. About 13 days of the month reach 30 C or more, so most afternoons are warm, and the sun is strong even when the thermometer is not extreme. The hottest December day on the 1991 to 2020 record was 33.5 C and the coolest night was 18.9 C, so the range is narrow. You will not need warm clothes. You will need sun protection, a water bottle and a plan for the middle of the day.

What time is sunrise and sunset in Ahangama in December?

Daylight is almost fixed through December, because the solstice falls on 22 December and Sri Lanka is close to the equator. Days are about 11 hours 46 to 48 minutes long. Sunrise gets later all month, and sunset gets later too.

Date (2026)SunriseSunset

Source: timeanddate for Galle, month view for December 2026, fetched 24 October 2026. Ahangama is only about 20 km east of Galle, so expect it to be within a minute or two of these times. The practical point is that it is dark by about 6 pm, so lessons, sunset walks and tuk-tuk rides all need to fit into roughly twelve hours of light.

What is the surf like in Ahangama in December?

December is inside the south coast surf season. Soul & Surf, a surf school in Ahangama, says peak surf season runs from October to April. The Surf Atlas guide to Ahangama says the rains stop and the ocean storms ease around November, which paves the way for regular southern swells, and that by December things are ticking along nicely, with the start of the dry season sometimes meaning heavier waves. We found no official wave forecast or swell record for Ahangama, so we give no wave heights.

What December changes is which break is right for you. The Surf Atlas guide describes a mix of beach breaks and reefs along the same strip of coast:

BreakWhat Surf Atlas saysFits
Ahangama Beach BreakProtected inlet, small forgiving waves, used by beginner groupsBeginners, families
Kabalana beachMellow shorebreak, rarely big, prone to crumblingStarters
MarshmellowOne of the deepest reef breaks on the south coast, now busyBeginners moving off whitewater, loggers
Rajith's and SticksShallow reef over coral, steeper on bigger daysIntermediates and up
DalawellaNeeds a good south swell, hurt by north or cross-shore west winds, urchinsExperienced, early morning

This is a surf blog written for surfers, not an official safety assessment, and it was last updated on 3 June 2025. Breaks change with swell, tide and sandbars. Surf schools pick the spot each morning, and Soul & Surf says it checks the forecast early or drives spot to spot at sunrise. If you are new, take a lesson rather than choosing a reef yourself. Our surfing guide walks through the checks to make before you paddle out, and the Ahangama destination page lists lesson prices we sampled in October.

One caution on the water itself. The UK Foreign Office says many beaches in Sri Lanka have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year, and tells visitors to get advice from their hotel or tour operator before going in. Calm weather on land is not a safety signal for the sea.

How busy and expensive is Ahangama in December?

Busy, and the pressure builds through the month. Three facts point the same way:

  • Arrivals. December 2025 was Sri Lanka's busiest month of that year, with 258,928 visitor arrivals according to SLTDA, as reported in our Sri Lanka in December guide.
  • Our Ahangama page advises booking rooms early for December and January.
  • The surf crowd. The Surf Atlas guide says Marshmellow is now busy and tells surfers to come early. It also lists growing crowds and prices as the town's main downsides.

Prices show the same shape. Villa Mugatiya, a private villa in Ahangama, publishes its rate card. It is one luxury villa, not an average for the town, but it shows how a calendar can work.

Stay windowVilla Mugatiya published rateWhat it means for you
Sept and OctUS$430 a nightOff-season price band
NovUS$490 a nightShoulder band
1 to 19 DecUS$620 a night, 20% off stays of 4 nights or moreDry season, standard peak band
20 Dec to 3 JanUS$840 a night, 5-night minimum around Christmas or New YearTop band, minimum stay applies

Source: the villa's own rates page, read 24 October 2026. Rates were not checked against any booking site. The shape is what matters. If your dates are flexible, finishing before 20 December keeps you out of the top band at this villa, and other properties may use similar cut-offs. Some resorts also add a compulsory gala dinner charge on 24 and 31 December, so read the terms for those nights.

What does a December day in Ahangama look like?

Here is a sample day built from the facts above. It is our suggestion, not a published schedule.

  1. Around 6:00 am. First light. Sunrise is about 6:10 am in mid-December. Soul & Surf's lessons meet at 6:30 am, which tells you how early the surf day starts.
  2. 7:00 to 9:30 am. The best water time. Surf Atlas notes that early morning avoids the breeze at Dalawella, and the sun is lower. Pick the break that matches your level.
  3. Late morning. Breakfast, shade and rest. Highs near 30 C make the middle of the day the least pleasant for exercise.
  4. Afternoon. Short walks, a visit to nearby Galle, or a rain-day swap if showers arrive. Our Galle destination page and Galle versus Unawatuna guide help you decide how to use a half day.
  5. About 5:30 pm. Head to the beach for sunset. The light is gone by about 6 pm.

With 11 rain days in the month, plan for one or two wet afternoons, not a washout. If a shower catches you, wait it out under a roof. It usually passes.

How do I get to Ahangama in December?

By rail, our Ahangama page shows the station 134.17 km from Colombo Fort, with fares of Rs 1,050 in 1st class, Rs 550 in 2nd and Rs 260 in 3rd. Not every train stops at Ahangama, and we could not confirm times, so check Sri Lanka Railways notices for your date and read the Colombo to Galle train guide. If you want to see more of the coast first, the south coast region page and the Weligama versus Mirissa versus Tangalle guide compare the towns around it. December traffic is heavier, so leave extra time for a transfer.

What should I pack for Ahangama in December?

  • Light, quick-drying clothes and a light rain layer.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. The midday sun is strong.
  • A rash vest if you will surf, so you do not burn on the water.
  • A refillable water bottle.
  • Sandals you can wear in a tuk-tuk and on wet reef paths.
  • A dry bag for your phone and cards.

What is the bottom line for Ahangama in December?

Go in December if you want warm, mostly dry weather and the surf season at full strength, and be ready to plan ahead. Book rooms early. Surf at dawn. Treat 20 December to 3 January as the most expensive and crowded stretch. If you would rather have fewer people, our Ahangama destination page and south coast overview show the towns around it. Check Sri Lanka Railways notices for your date, and ask your guesthouse about the sea every morning.

Yes, if you want the south coast in its dry season. Sri Lanka Tourism lists December to February as the peak season on the south-west coast, with clear skies and calm seas. The trade-off is people and prices: book rooms early, and expect the last third of the month to cost the most.

What time is sunrise and sunset in Ahangama in December?

We use Galle's times, which should be within a minute or two of Ahangama's. Sunrise is 6:04 am on 1 December, 6:15 am on 24 December and 6:18 am on 31 December. Sunset is 5:52 pm on 1 December, 6:01 pm on 24 December and 6:05 pm on 31 December. Day length stays close to 11 hours 47 minutes.

Is it safe to swim at Ahangama in December?

When should I book a stay in Ahangama for December?

As early as you can, and before 20 December if your dates are flexible. One villa we sampled, Villa Mugatiya, lists US$620 a night for December and January and US$840 a night from 20 December to 3 January with a five-night minimum. Other places will differ, so check each one.
