Is Sri Lanka safe to visit?
Sri Lanka is generally safe for tourists. The US, UK, Australia and Germany all allow travel. Their advice levels, last-updated dates and listed risks sit side by side, checked 17 October 2026.

Is Sri Lanka safe to visit right now?
Yes. Sri Lanka is generally safe for tourists. On 17 October 2026, none of the four governments we checked, the US, the UK, Australia and Germany, advised its citizens against travel to Sri Lanka.
Those advisories are ordinary trip context, not a reason to stay away. The US rates it Level 2 of 4 ("exercise increased caution") and Australia says "exercise a high degree of caution (level 2 of 4), still current at 17 October 2026", due to the threat of public demonstrations and security risks. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel to any part of Sri Lanka. Germany lists no travel warning (Reisewarnung). The everyday risks they all mention are petty theft, scams, harassment, road safety, dengue and heavy rain.
This page is a summary, not a replacement for official advice. The table below keeps each government's wording, level and source. Practical precautions follow in the "what to do" column and the later sections.
What do the US, UK, Australian and German advisories say?
| Government | Advice level | Last updated (as shown on the page) | Main reasons given | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Level 2 of 4: exercise increased caution | Date issued 14 Oct 2025 | Civil unrest, terrorism, landmines in parts of the north and east | travel.state.gov |
| United Kingdom | No advice against travel to any area | Updated 21 Sep 2026; still current 17 Oct 2026 | Heavy rain, floods and landslides; flight disruption via Middle East hubs; fuel quota; terrorism cannot be ruled out | GOV.UK FCDO |
| Australia | Exercise a high degree of caution (level 2 of 4), still current at 17 October 2026 | Still current at 17 October 2026 | Due to the threat of public demonstrations and security risks | Smartraveller |
| Germany | No travel warning (Reisewarnung) | Stand 17 Oct 2026; unchanged in substance since 17 Jul 2026 | Fuel rationing since 15 Mar 2026; do not hire vehicles without a local driver; dengue | Auswärtiges Amt |
Two dates are worth reading carefully. The US advisory was issued a year ago and has not changed level since. The UK page changes most often: its latest update, on 21 September 2026, added the heavy rain warning.
What are the main risks for tourists?
These are the risks that at least two of the four governments mention, in plain words.
| Risk | What the advisories say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Protests | Can start at short notice; police have used tear gas and water cannon (US, UK) | Avoid crowds and rallies; check local news |
| Terrorism | Attacks "cannot be ruled out" (UK); the 2019 Easter attacks hit churches and hotels | Stay alert in crowded places and on religious holidays |
| Petty crime | Bag snatching from motorbikes, hotel room theft, card skimming (US, UK) | Use ATMs inside banks; carry bags away from the road |
| Scams | Tuk-tuk overcharging, "special" gem shop tours, surf board damage claims (US) | Use ride apps; photograph a rented board first |
| Scams: fake airline apps | Fake SriLankan Airlines apps that ask for OTPs, PINs or card details; the airline warned about them on 19 October 2026 (Daily Mirror) | Get the app only from the App Store or Google Play, publisher "SriLankan Airlines Limited" |
| Harassment of women | Widespread on buses, at stations and in markets (US, UK) | See the solo travel section below |
| Roads | Crowded, mixed traffic; Germany warns against self-drive | Hire a car with a driver |
| Weather | Floods and landslides in heavy rain (UK, US) | Watch Met Department warnings; keep spare days |
| Health | Dengue; tap water not safe in many areas (US, Germany) | Repellent by day; bottled or treated water |
| Landmines | Small areas in the north and east (US, UK) | Stay on roads and marked paths |
Is the south coast safe?
The four advisories do not single out the south coast for any special warning. The UK regional advice covers mine clearance in the north and east only. The everyday risks still apply: watch your bag on the main road through Mirissa and the other beach towns, use ride apps rather than street tuk-tuks at night, and follow lifeguard flags and local warnings, because sea conditions change by bay. The south coast region guide helps you pick a beach town and explains how to check swimming conditions.
The US embassy adds one tip that surfers should know: some surf schools have claimed customers damaged boards and demanded high repair fees. Take photos of your board before you paddle out.
Is the east coast and Arugam Bay safe?
The UK and US both mention old minefields in parts of the east, mostly former military sites, and tell travellers to stay on roads and cleared paths. That is not a warning about the beaches themselves. The bigger issue for most visitors from October to March is weather: the east coast is in its wet north-east monsoon. Read the Arugam Bay guide for what changes in the off-season and when the surf season returns.
Is Sri Lanka safe for solo female travellers?
Many women travel alone in Sri Lanka, but the US, UK and German advisories all flag harassment. The US says sexual harassment "is widespread", with catcalling and physical harassment in crowded areas and on public transport. The UK lists markets, bus and train stations, buses, sporting events and tourist sites as the main places. Germany notes rare violent and sexual assaults on women travelling alone or in small groups, including in tourist centres, and warns about drink spiking in very cheap places to stay.
Practical steps that come from that advice:
- Book well-reviewed guesthouses or hotels, not the cheapest bed in town.
- Never leave a drink unattended, and do not accept drinks from strangers.
- Use PickMe or Uber for tuk-tuks and taxis, especially after dark. The US embassy names both apps.
- On trains and buses, sit near other women or families.
- Dress to cover shoulders and knees at temples, which also draws less attention elsewhere. The what to wear guide has a packing list.
Is it safe to drive or ride a tuk-tuk yourself?
Germany advises against it. The Auswärtiges Amt says it advises against renting vehicles without a local driver, especially tuk-tuks, because after a traffic accident you can face a long investigation and an exit ban of weeks or months. The US describes roads crowded with trucks, buses and ox carts, and recommends a vehicle with working seatbelts. Most visitors hire a car with a driver. The getting around guide explains drivers, trains and buses.
The US embassy also recommends avoiding public buses because of harassment and theft risk. Trains are a common alternative on the main routes, such as the Kandy to Ella train.
For the hill country, the Nanu Oya to Ella train guide explains the part of the line that is running.

How do fuel limits and Middle East flight disruption affect a trip?
Both are live issues in October 2026.
- Fuel. Germany says fuel has been rationed since 15 March 2026, with a weekly quota after online registration. The UK says the government has announced special arrangements for tour operators and hotels. Ask your driver or tour company how they get fuel before you book a road trip.
- Flights. The UK warns that some flights from Colombo to the UK via Middle Eastern hubs may be delayed, postponed or re-routed. Germany gives the same warning for Gulf hubs. Consider a direct flight; see direct flights to Sri Lanka for London and Zurich nonstops.
- Hotline. Both the UK and Germany point travellers to Sri Lanka Tourism's 24-hour hotline, 1912.
What health risks should you plan for?
Dengue is the main one this year. Germany's foreign office says more than 70,000 dengue cases were reported in Sri Lanka in 2026, with DENV-2 the main type, and that health services may be overloaded. The US also lists chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis and says tap water is not safe to drink in many areas.
- Use insect repellent in the daytime, when dengue mosquitoes bite.
- Drink bottled or treated water and ask for drinks without ice if unsure.
- Buy travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. The US notes that medical care outside Colombo is limited.
- Carry prescription medicine in its original packet with a copy of the prescription.
What laws and customs can get tourists into trouble?
The UK and US list the same short set of rules. Breaking them can mean a fine, arrest or deportation.
- Do not pose with your back to a Buddha statue, and do not display Buddha tattoos. Both can lead to arrest or refused entry.
- Carry your passport or a copy at all times; police and military checkpoints can ask for it.
- Do not photograph military bases or government buildings, and do not fly drones near them.
- Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry long jail sentences.
- Do not bring e-cigarettes or vapes into the country (US list of prohibited items).
- Same-sex sexual activity is illegal, though the UK says it is not aware of prosecutions.
For temples, the visiting sacred sites guide explains shoes, dress and photos, including at the Dambulla cave temple.
What should you do before you go?
- Read your own government's page in the week you fly, using the links in the table above.
- Get your ETA only on the official site. See the Sri Lanka visa guide.
- Register with your embassy: US travellers can join STEP; German travellers can register on the ELEFAND list; UK travellers can sign up for FCDO email alerts.
- Buy travel insurance with medical evacuation.
- Set up data for ride apps and maps. The eSIM guide compares tourist plans.
- Save the numbers: 119 police, 1990 ambulance, 1912 tourist hotline (US embassy list).
Are there power cuts in Sri Lanka? (Checked 22 October 2026)
Rarely island-wide, but one happened on Saturday 17 October 2026. Ada Derana reported that the National System Operator (NSO) said the outage began at around 11:45 a.m. "due to a major system failure in the transmission network", causing a total failure of the power grid, and that supply was later fully restored across the island (Ada Derana, 17 October 2026). CNA, citing officials, reported the country was without grid power for more than two hours, that excess solar generation was suspected, and that the whole grid also shut down in February 2025 (CNA, 17 October 2026).
Scheduled one-hour cuts ran from 19 to 21 October 2026. The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) approved one-hour power cuts for those three days, because the Lakvijaya Power Station was unavailable after the blackout. The island was split into four groups, and each group could lose power for one hour a day between 4:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The cuts were to go ahead only if the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) had to manage demand, and start and end times could vary by up to 30 minutes (Newswire, 19 October 2026; Ada Derana, 19 October 2026).
| Power cut started between | 20 October | 21 October |
|---|---|---|
| 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. | Group 4 | Group 3 |
| 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. | Group 1 | Group 4 |
| 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. | Group 2 | Group 1 |
| 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. | Group 3 | Group 2 |
We have kept the 20 and 21 October schedule above for reference only.
Checked 22 October 2026: no cuts approved after 21 October. The approved schedule covered 19, 20 and 21 October only, and the Daily Mirror reported on 21 October that it was the final day of scheduled cuts. On 22 October 2026 we found no PUCSL approval or published schedule for any later day. We have not seen an official statement that the Lakvijaya Power Station is back in service, so if cuts return, check local news or ask your hotel.
What this means for a trip:
- Keep a charged power bank for your phone, since maps, ride apps and tickets all live on it.
- Carry some cash. Card machines and ATMs need power and a connection. Our money and ATMs guide covers cash limits and paying by card or UPI.
- Check planned cuts. The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) points customers to its planned power interruption schedule and SMS alerts, so ask your hotel or host to tell you about any planned cut in its area.
- Ask your hotel whether it has a generator if you depend on air conditioning or medical equipment.
For the 17 October outage, we found no official NSO or CEB statement page on 18 October 2026, so the details above come from the news reports linked, both fetched on 18 October 2026.
