Sri Lanka customs allowance for tourists

What tourists can bring into Sri Lanka, from the Sri Lanka Customs passenger page: 1.5 litres of liquor, no cigarettes or cigars at all, the USD 15,000 cash declaration (USD 10,000 going out), gems, gold, fruit and plants, equipment under an ATA carnet, and what you need approval to take home, such as antiques and wooden furniture. Checked 26 October 2026.

What can tourists bring into Sri Lanka?

Quick answer: As a tourist you can bring your personal belongings, plus 1.5 litres of liquor bought at Sri Lanka Duty Free or brought in on the day you arrive. You cannot bring cigarettes, cigars, beedies or snuff at all. Declare cash over USD 15,000, declare any gemstones, and do not pack fresh fruit: it is not allowed by air.

At Bandaranaike International Airport, the few things that cause trouble are the ones people do not expect: a carton of cigarettes, an apple from the plane, or a gemstone bought without the right paperwork. This page lists those in one place.

How much alcohol can you bring?

Sri Lanka Customs sets these liquor allowances:

TravellerLiquor allowance
Foreigners1.5 litres
Sri Lankan residents2.5 litres

All liquor must either be bought at Sri Lanka Duty Free shops or brought from abroad on the day you arrive. Liquor sent as unaccompanied baggage is not allowed duty free. In practice, two standard 70 cl bottles come to 1.4 litres, which fits inside the foreigner's limit, and a 1 litre bottle plus a 50 cl bottle reaches it exactly.

Alcohol is usually not available on Poya full moon days, which the nightlife guide lists, so some visitors like to arrive with a bottle for their room.

Can you bring cigarettes or vapes?

Cigarettes, cigars, beedies and snuff are not allowed to be imported to Sri Lanka as personal baggage, whether you carry them or send them separately. That is stricter than in many countries, where a small duty-free allowance is normal. Sri Lanka Customs gives no duty-free tobacco allowance at all on its passenger page.

The passenger page does not mention e-cigarettes or vapes. The UK government says police could fine you for ignoring "no smoking" signs in public areas. If you rely on a vape, check with the airline and your embassy before you fly rather than assuming it is fine.

How much cash can you bring in or take out?

You may bring in or take out any amount of money, as long as it was legally acquired. These are the declaration limits:

DirectionLimitWhat you must do
Bringing cash inMore than USD 15,000 or equivalentDeclare it to Customs; you get a currency declaration receipt
Taking declared cash back outAny amount under USD 15,000Declare it if you want to take it back out
Taking cash outMore than USD 10,000 or equivalentDeclare it to Customs

Most visitors carry far less and use cards and ATMs. The money and ATMs guide explains cash, cards and exchange.

What are the rules for gems and gold?

Sri Lanka is famous for gemstones, so these rules matter on the way home:

  • Gemstones coming in. Declare them to Customs. There is a service fee of USD 200 per person.
  • Gemstones going out. Exports must go through the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA). Customs says taking gemstones out without NGJA authentication counts as smuggling. Ask the seller for the NGJA paperwork before you pay.
  • Gold. Only genuine personal jewellery in a reasonable quantity can be brought in or taken out. Rough or unfinished jewellery, ingots and gold biscuits are not allowed as passenger baggage.

Can you bring food, plants or animals?

  • Fruit. All fruits, including apples, grapes, mangoes, peaches and kiwi, are not allowed by air in personal baggage. Customs sends them to the plant quarantine unit at the airport, where they are destroyed. Eat or bin that airline apple before you land.
  • Plants. You need a permit from the Department of Agriculture's Plant Quarantine Unit in Katunayake before you travel, plus a phytosanitary certificate from the country you are coming from. Some plants, such as orchids, adeniums, hoya and ixora, are allowed with a licence. Anthuriums, palms, ficus, citrus and conifers are not allowed.
  • Animals. Only domestic animals can be imported, with prior approval from the Animal Quarantine Unit and a quarantine certificate. Duty and other charges apply.
  • Plant and animal parts. Any part of a plant (fresh or dried fruit, leaves, seeds, twigs, roots) or of an animal (skins, teeth, hair, chanks, shells) needs prior approval to bring in or take out. That includes shells from the beach.

What about cameras, laptops and work equipment?

Passenger baggage means goods brought in for your own use or your family's use, not in commercial quantities. For foreigners, Customs says goods brought in for personal use count as baggage. So your phone, laptop and camera are normal.

For professional equipment, exhibition goods, commercial samples, scientific or teaching equipment that you will take back out, Customs says you can use an ATA carnet. If you bring something for a specific purpose and plan to re-export it without a carnet, ask Customs on arrival. Anything in commercial quantities can be charged duty and penalties.

Drones are a separate question. The UK government points to Sri Lanka's Civil Aviation Authority for drone rules, and we could not open that site on 26 October 2026. Check it before you pack one.

What can't you take home from Sri Lanka?

Customs restricts these exports as personal baggage:

ItemWhat you need
GemstonesExport through the National Gem and Jewellery Authority
Antiques (anything older than 100 years)Prior approval from the Department of Archaeology
Replicas of antiquesProof that they are replicas, or they will not be allowed out
Wooden furniturePrior approval from the Forest Department
Plant and animal parts, including shellsPrior approval

If a shop says a carving or statue is old, ask for the paperwork or assume it cannot leave.

What are the drug rules at the airport?

The UK government says illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties, with long jail sentences and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling them, including when transiting through the airport. It says airports in Sri Lanka use technology to detect illegal items, and that this is also used on transit passengers' baggage. Never carry a bag for someone else.

If you take prescription medicine, keep it in its original packaging with a copy of your prescription. The Customs passenger page does not list medicine rules, so check with the Sri Lankan embassy in your country if you carry large amounts or controlled drugs.

What are the allowances for Sri Lankans and returning residents?

Sri Lankan passport holders, residence visa holders and dual citizens with a Sri Lankan passport get a duty-free allowance based on how long they were abroad. For adults, Customs lists:

Time abroadGeneral allowanceIncluding the duty-free shop
Less than 90 daysUSD 125USD 187.50
90 days to less than 365 daysUSD 500USD 625
More than 365 daysUSD 1,000USD 1,750

Minors get USD 87.50 (USD 125 with the duty-free shop) for less than 90 days and USD 187.50 for longer. Dual citizens must travel on their Sri Lankan passport to get this allowance. Airline crew get no allowance.

What else should you sort out before you fly?

  • Visa. Most visitors need one before travel. See the Sri Lanka visa guide.
  • Arrival. The Colombo airport arrival guide covers immigration, SIM cards, money and transport into town.
  • Religious images. The UK government says visible tattoos of Buddha can get you refused entry or deported.
  • Clothes. The what to wear guide covers temples and beaches.

A local tourist SIM or eSIM from Dialog, SLT-Mobitel or Hutch costs about USD 2.50 to 9 for a week to a month of data, priced on the operators' own pages on 20 October 2026. An eSIM saves the SIM swap and keeps your home SIM in the phone; a physical SIM works in any unlocked phone.
