Direct Flights to Sri Lanka from the UK, Europe, India and Australia

Yes. SriLankan Airlines sells London Heathrow to Colombo flights on its own site, and British Airways flies London Gatwick to Colombo from 23 October 2026, three times a week for the winter season (airline pages checked 15 October 2026). SriLankan also sells India and Australia city pairs to Colombo; Jetstar launched a direct Melbourne to Colombo service on 25 August 2026. Confirm days, times and stops in the booking, because fare pages are not a full timetable.

Are there direct flights to Sri Lanka from the UK? (Checked 15 October 2026)

Yes, from London, and this winter there are more of them. British Airways says its new London Gatwick to Colombo route runs from 23 October 2026, three times a week, for the winter season only. SriLankan Airlines sells London Heathrow to Colombo on its own site. From mainland Europe, Edelweiss flies Zurich to Colombo seasonally and is adding a weekly flight from the end of October to mid-January, for up to three a week.

All three land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), the main international arrival point near Colombo. Airlines change timetables, so treat this page as a starting point and confirm the days, times and stops in your booking.

When does British Airways start flying to Colombo?

On Friday 23 October 2026. British Airways announced the route on 16 March 2026 as part of its winter 2026 expansion: three flights a week from London Gatwick to Colombo, for the winter season only, with World Traveller (economy), World Traveller Plus (premium economy) and Club World (business class) cabins. On 21 September 2026 the airline's BA Groups Travel Hub repeated the 23 October launch date and the three-a-week winter pattern.

The timetable as printed in British Airways' 14 October 2026 release. The March announcement had given 17:30 and 11:00 departures; the October release moves both earlier:

Times are local at each airport. Both releases print the same Monday, Wednesday and Friday pattern for the return flight, but the first return date, 24 October 2026, is a Saturday, so check the return day on your booking rather than relying on the table. British Airways also says the final schedule is subject to scheduling and slot constraints. The October release says return fares start from £524, including taxes and carrier fees; that is BA's headline "from" price on 14 October 2026, not a quote for your dates.

How long is the direct flight from London to Colombo?

About 10 hours 25 minutes outbound on BA's winter timetable. The times in BA's 14 October 2026 release are 16:40 from Gatwick and 08:35 the next morning in Colombo. GOV.UK confirms that UK clocks go back on 25 October 2026, after which Sri Lanka is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of the UK, which makes the outbound flight about 10 hours 25 minutes. The first flight on 23 October departs while the UK is still on British Summer Time, so that one works out at about 11 hours 25 minutes. The return, 10:35 from Colombo and 17:00 at Gatwick, works out at about 11 hours 55 minutes once UK clocks have gone back. For comparison, Edelweiss gives its Zurich to Colombo flight time as 10 hours.

Flying from the UK: Gatwick, Heathrow or one stop?

From 23 October 2026, UK travellers have two nonstop options from London, and everything else needs a change. British Airways confirmed the Gatwick launch date again on its BA Groups Travel Hub (published 21 September 2026, re-checked 17 October 2026): three flights a week, winter season only, in World Traveller, World Traveller Plus and Club World (BA Groups Travel Hub).

Why a nonstop matters this winter. The UK Foreign Office says escalation in the Middle East has caused airspace closures and delayed and cancelled flights, and that "some flights from Colombo to the UK via Middle Eastern hubs may be delayed, postponed, or re-routed" (FCDO Sri Lanka travel advice, updated 21 September 2026, still current 17 October 2026). If you book a one-stop ticket through a Gulf hub, check the FCDO advice for that transit country and your insurance cover.

Before you fly from the UK:

1. ETA: free for UK passport holders, but apply before you travel on eta.gov.lk only (visa guide).
2. Clocks: UK clocks go back on 25 October 2026, after which Sri Lanka is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead.
3. Season: the BA flights match the south-west coast's dry season. See Sri Lanka in December and Sri Lanka in January for weather by coast.

First night after a Gatwick landing. The BA flight lands at 08:35. Bentota, about 61 km south of Colombo Fort by rail, is an easy first beach stop, or head straight to the south coast with the airport to Galle and Mirissa guide.

Does SriLankan Airlines fly direct from London Heathrow?

SriLankan Airlines' own route page sells London Heathrow (LHR) to Colombo (CMB) fares for October 2026 onwards. On 15 October 2026 we still could not find a SriLankan page that sets out the current Heathrow timetable, so this page does not give its days or times. Check the stops and times in the booking before you pay. SriLankan's timetable page says schedules can change without notice and asks passengers to check their flight status 24 hours before departure.

Which cities in Europe have direct flights to Sri Lanka?

From the official pages we could read on 15 October 2026, Edelweiss remains the mainland-Europe carrier whose Colombo page states a weekly nonstop pattern. London is covered above. For Germany, see the Frankfurt section: Condor says it does not fly direct, and SriLankan sells Frankfurt to Colombo without publishing a weekly frequency on that sales page.

Zurich (Edelweiss). Edelweiss is a Swiss leisure airline. Its newsroom said on 2 July 2026 that Colombo gets an additional weekly flight from the end of October to mid-January, "with up to three flights per week now offered", and its long-haul comparison table shows Colombo at 2 flights a week in winter 2025/26 and 3 in winter 2026/27. Its winter schedule runs from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027. The airline's Colombo page lists the flights month by month:

That page does not give the weekdays or the date of the first flight, so pick the date in the Edelweiss booking.

On 21 October 2026 the Edelweiss online timetable listed, from Zurich to Colombo, 3 flights in October 2026, 13 in November, 13 in December, 10 in January 2027, 8 in February, 9 in March, 9 in April and 4 in May, then none from June to October 2027.

Other cities. We found no official airline page today confirming a nonstop from anywhere else in Europe besides the London, Zurich and Frankfurt pages already named. If you are flying from elsewhere, you will usually connect, and the airline's booking page will show the stops.

Routes SriLankan sells from India

These SriLankan rows are fare pages, not a confirmed non-stop timetable. On 15 October 2026 its India site listed popular flights from Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Thiruvananthapuram to Colombo. Dedicated fare pages we opened the same day sold Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru to Colombo. Those pages list ticket dates and fares. They do not state a weekly non-stop frequency, so this guide does not invent one. Check whether your itinerary is non-stop in the booking.

Direct flights from Australia

Yes, from Melbourne, on both SriLankan Airlines and Jetstar, according to those airlines' own news pages. SriLankan also sells Sydney to Colombo.

SriLankan's Melbourne fare page still sold MEL to CMB dates when we checked on 15 October 2026. This page does not quote sale fares. Australia is on the free tourist ETA list; apply at eta.gov.lk.

Direct flights from Germany

Condor does not currently fly direct to Colombo. Its Frankfurt to Colombo page, checked 15 October 2026, says it does not fly direct and sells connections with a change instead.

SriLankan Airlines sells Frankfurt (FRA) to Colombo on its flights from Germany and Frankfurt to Colombo pages. Those pages list fares. They do not state a weekly non-stop frequency, so this guide does not claim three flights a week or any other unpublished pattern. Check the stops in the booking.

Germany is on the free tourist ETA list. Apply only on eta.gov.lk.

Are there direct flights from Russia to Sri Lanka? (Checked 19 October 2026)

Yes, charter flights are planned for winter 2026/27. AZUR air says it will restart direct charter flights to Sri Lanka in the winter 2026/2027 season, after none since winter 2024/2025. All flights use Boeing 767-300 aircraft and land at Mattala International Airport near Hambantota on the south coast, not at Colombo (AZUR air news, 28 August 2026).

The airline says start dates are preliminary and may shift slightly. These seats are sold as package tours through tour operators. One operator, FUN&SUN, listed its Moscow (Vnukovo) programme from 3 November 2026 to 29 April 2027, with a 10 kg baggage allowance plus 5 kg of hand luggage (RST, 16 July 2026). Mattala is on the south coast near Hambantota, so check the transfer time to your hotel before you book.

Travel reports also say Aeroflot flies scheduled flights from Moscow Sheremetyevo to Colombo, but we could not open Aeroflot's own pages to confirm the schedule on 19 October 2026. Check aeroflot.ru before you book. Russian citizens are on the official list of 40 nationalities that get a free 30-day tourist ETA from 25 May 2026 (official ETA site).

Which winter flights land at Mattala? (Checked 21 October 2026)

Two Central Asian airlines say they start flying to Mattala on 28 October 2026. Both routes are on the airlines' own websites. Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI) is in Hambantota district on the south coast, not near Colombo.

Centrum Air says it will use Airbus A320 family aircraft and lists fares from UZS 4.3 million. Sunday Airlines calls its flights a charter programme and sells them with holiday packages.

Entry. On 21 October 2026 the official ETA site listed Kazakhstan and Russia among the 40 countries with a free 30-day tourist ETA. Uzbekistan was not on the list, so Uzbek tourists pay USD 50 online (USD 60 on arrival). Everyone applies before flying.

From Mattala. Tissamaharama, the town closest to Yala's Palatupana side, is about 29 km by road (about 35 minutes with no traffic). Hambantota and Tangalle are further along the coast.

Are any SriLankan routes suspended? (Checked 22 October 2026)

Yes, two Middle East routes. In a notice dated 16 October 2026, SriLankan Airlines said the suspension of all flights between Colombo and Dammam, and between Colombo and Riyadh, is extended until 24 October 2026 "due to the prevailing security situation in the region" (SriLankan Airlines notice). The airline says services will resume once conditions are assessed as suitable. If you planned to connect through Saudi Arabia, check your booking with the airline. The UK, India, Australia and Europe routes on this page are not part of that notice.

Update, 22 October 2026: SriLankan Airlines has extended the Dammam and Riyadh suspension again, until and including 1 November 2026, for the same security reasons (Daily Mirror, 22 October 2026). For help, the airline lists 1979 within Sri Lanka and +94 11 777 1979 from abroad.

What should you know about flying SriLankan Airlines? (Checked 20 October 2026)

SriLankan Airlines flies to Colombo from London, Paris and Frankfurt, and its Economy tickets include 30 kg of checked bags on routes outside the Americas. Here is what its own pages said on 20 October 2026.

The airline's timetable page says schedules can change without notice and asks you to check your flight status 24 hours before you fly. One more tip: on 19 October 2026 SriLankan Airlines warned about fake mobile apps using its name. Download its app only from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and check that the publisher is "SriLankan Airlines Limited". The airline says it never asks for OTPs, banking PINs or card details (Daily Mirror, 19 October 2026).

Do UK travellers need a visa for Sri Lanka?

You need an ETA, and for UK passport holders it is free. GOV.UK's Sri Lanka entry requirements say you must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization before travelling, that ETAs are issued free of charge and valid for 30 days, and that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you arrive. The official eta.gov.lk notice lists the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany and 37 other countries in the free 30-day tourist ETA scheme from 25 May 2026, with double entry within the 30 days. Is winter a good time to fly to Sri Lanka?

For the south and west coasts, yes. Both the BA and the extra Edelweiss flights run in the winter, which is the main season on that side of the island. Sri Lanka Tourism's weather page calls December to February, the north-east monsoon, peak season on the south-west coast, with clear skies and calm seas. October and November are the second inter-monsoon, with occasional heavy showers across the island. This year the Department of Meteorology's seasonal outlook, issued 2 October 2026, expects above-normal rainfall in most parts of the country from October to December 2026.

What should you sort out before you land?

1. ETA. Apply on eta.gov.lk before you fly. See the visa guide.

3. The first transfer. Plan the road or rail leg from the airport with getting around Sri Lanka.
