Colombo Airport to Nuwara Eliya

Colombo airport to Nuwara Eliya distance: about 153 km on two road samples, the airport's fixed-fare card rate of Rs 34,992, bus fares and what the 1,868 m climb means for your first day. Checked 27 October 2026.

How far is Nuwara Eliya from Colombo airport? (Checked 27 October 2026)

Quick answer: Nuwara Eliya is about 151 to 153 km from Bandaranaike International Airport by road, depending on the route. Our two map samples on 25 October 2026 gave 2 hours 59 minutes and 3 hours 11 minutes with no traffic. The airport's own taxi card, read the same day, lists NUWARAELIYA at Rs 34,992. We found no direct airport bus, so the main choices are that taxi, a private driver, or two bus legs.

Which road is shorter: the A7 or the A5?

Many pages quote one number for this trip. We sampled two routes, because the real choice is between two different mountain roads. On 25 October 2026 we asked the OSRM driving router for routes between the airport terminal area and Nuwara Eliya town, using OpenStreetMap data. On 27 October 2026 we ran the same request again: the A7 route came back unchanged, but the router offered a different second route, so the A5 figures below are from the 25 October sample. OSRM does not include traffic, roadworks or rain.

RouteDistanceTimeMain roads in the route
Via Hatton, the A7153.1 kmAbout 2 h 59 minB208 and B445 out of Katunayake, then the A7 for about 91 km through Hatton and Talawakelle
Via Kadugannawa and the A5151.4 kmAbout 3 h 11 minB208 and B445, then the A1 for about 53 km, some local roads and the B172, then the A5 for about 52 km

The A7 route is about 12 minutes quicker and 1.7 km longer. The difference is small enough that traffic, a slow lorry or a rain delay will decide which one is better on your day. Your driver will know which road is moving. Our Sri Lanka map and distances guide lists Colombo to Nuwara Eliya at 158 km and 3 h 3 min. That sample starts in Colombo, not at the airport terminal, so the figures are close but not the same.

Both samples end in the middle of Nuwara Eliya town. A hotel a few kilometres out, near a tea estate or the lake, will add a little to either figure.

What is the airport taxi rate to Nuwara Eliya?

Card destination nameRate (Rs)
KANDY21,384
GAMPOLA21,384
NAWALAPITIYA23,760
KOTMALE25,380
RAMBODA25,380
NANUOYA30,240
NUWARAELIYA34,992
BANDARAWELA34,992
WELIMADA35,208

Notice that NUWARAELIYA is written as one word, and that it has the same rate as BANDARAWELA, Rs 34,992. If you are not sure which name applies to you, ask the counter to find it on the screen. The card lists NANUOYA at Rs 30,240, which is Rs 4,752 lower than Nuwara Eliya, but the card does not say how the rate is built, so check the exact stop with your hotel before you choose a nearer name.

The airport page also lists two add-ons: Rs 130 for each extra kilometre beyond the requested destination, and Rs 300 for each extra drop within the agreed journey. It does not say how many passengers or bags the rate covers, or if expressway tolls are included. The counters are in the Arrival Lobby and the Arrival Outer Porch, and the phone number is +94 11 226 3096.

Is there a bus from Colombo airport to Nuwara Eliya?

Not directly, as far as we can tell. The airport lists two buses: the 187 to Colombo Fort (Rs 325 a person, about 50 minutes, boarding at the Departure Terminal Outer Porch) and a bus to the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre (Rs 410 a person, about 50 minutes, boarding at the Arrival Outer Porch). Baggage over 23 kg costs the same again on each.

The NTC fare tables, effective 6 July 2026, then list these routes from Colombo toward the hills:

NTC routeFromToNormalSemi-luxuryLuxury
79ColomboNuwara EliyaRs 844Rs 1,266Rs 1,619
18-2ColomboHattonRs 547Rs 821Rs 1,066
16-2ColomboHattonRs 793Not listedRs 1,523
245-1/182/18-2NegomboHattonRs 733Not listedNot listed

Adding two legs gives a rough floor. Bus 187 (Rs 325) plus route 79 normal (Rs 844) is Rs 1,169. With the semi-luxury fare it is Rs 1,591, and with luxury Rs 1,944. These sums leave out the wait between buses and any ride across Colombo if the two bus stops are not together. The tables give no timetable, no departure point and no list of stops, so ask at Colombo Fort before you pay.

We did not find a Hatton to Nuwara Eliya route in the inter-provincial table. If you go by Hatton, ask locally how to make the last leg. The NTC tables are printed in Sinhala. We read only the route number, the two end points and the three fare columns (normal, semi-luxury and air-conditioned luxury), and we have not read anything else into them.

What does the climb mean for your first day?

Nuwara Eliya is at about 1,868 m, according to our hill country altitude and weather guide. You climb from the coastal lowlands to that height in about three hours of driving with no traffic, so the air at the top can feel very different from the air you left at Katunayake.

The World Meteorological Organization normals quoted in our Ella vs Nuwara Eliya guide give Nuwara Eliya daytime highs of 18.6 to 22.5 C and night lows of 10.2 to 13.8 C across the year. That is the long-run average, not a forecast, and a rainy day can feel colder.

Do this before you leave the airportWhy
Keep a warm layer and a rain jacket in your carry-onYour suitcase will be in the boot, so you will not reach it on the road
Tell your hotel your flight number and expected arrival timeIt can tell you if the check-in time suits a mid-afternoon arrival
Eat and drink before the climbA map sample has no meal stops, so plan your own
Ask the driver to stop for a view, not to race the darkMountain roads are harder in rain or fog

What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 27 October 2026)

  • Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, published by the Disaster Management Centre, is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It replaces LEWM-26-10-2026-1800-33, which expired at 18:00 on 27 October, and lists the same divisions at the same levels. It puts Level 3 (Red) on Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya district, Level 2 (Amber) on Kothmale West and Kothmale East, and Level 1 (Yellow) on the Nuwara Eliya and Thalawakele areas. It also puts Level 2 (Amber) on Kegalle district areas, including Mawanella and Rambukkana, and on five Kandy district divisions: Pasbage Korale, Udunuwara, Ganga Ihala Korale, Udapalatha and Yatinuwara. The A5 route runs through Kandy district, and no Kandy division is at Level 3 (Red). Hatton and Talawakelle on our A7 sample are in Nuwara Eliya district, so check the latest warning before you choose a road.
  • Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 27 October 2026 said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, with fairly heavy falls above 75 mm likely at some places. It expected winds of 40 to 50 kmph at times on the western slopes of the Central hills. It said cyclone Arnab, a very severe cyclonic storm about 890 km north-east of Kankesanthurai, is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka.
  • What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave, again at your first stop, and again if rain turns heavy. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.

If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan. A short delay costs less than a risky road.
