How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to Negombo? (Checked 27 October 2026)

Quick answer: On the airport's fixed-fare card, read on 27 October 2026, a taxi to NEGOMBO is Rs 3,780. That is the lowest rate on the whole card. The town is about 11 km from the terminal, a drive of about 15 minutes with no traffic on our map sample. We found no official airport bus to Negombo, so the airport taxi counter or a ride app is the usual way.

Negombo is the nearest beach town to Bandaranaike International Airport, on the west coast north of Colombo. Many travellers use it for a first or last night. This page answers the cost question first, then helps you decide whether Negombo suits your trip. For the town itself, read our Negombo guide.

What does the airport's fixed-fare card say for Negombo?

Card destination nameRate (Rs)
NEGOMBO3,780
KATUNAYAKE3,780
JA-ELA3,780
SEEDUWA3,780
MINUWANGODA3,780
KANDANA4,752
KOCHCHIKADE5,130

WATTALA5,940
DUNAGAHA6,372
GAMPAHA6,480
WENNAPUWA7,236
MARAWILA8,424
CHILAW11,340

The card lists 15 destinations at Rs 3,780, the lowest rate on it. Negombo is one of them, along with the airport's own neighbours Katunayake, Ja-Ela and Seeduwa. A few hotels are also listed by name at that rate. We do not name them here, but it is worth asking the counter whether yours is one of them.

Two things the card does not say are how many passengers or bags the rate covers, and whether expressway tolls are included. Ask both before you pay. The airport page lists two add-ons: Rs 130 for each extra kilometre beyond the requested destination, and Rs 300 for each extra drop within the agreed journey. Taxi counters are in the Arrival Lobby and the Arrival Outer Porch, and the counter's number is +94 11 226 3096.

Does one rate cover the whole of Negombo?

The card has a single line for NEGOMBO, but Negombo is long. The town centre, Periyamulla and the beach park are all in different places. We sampled three points on the OSRM driving router on 27 October 2026, all with no traffic:

Point we sampledDistance by roadTime
Negombo town centre11.1 kmAbout 15 minutes
Periyamulla, north-east of the centre10.6 kmAbout 14 minutes
Negombo Beach Park, north of the centre13.4 kmAbout 19 minutes

These are map points, not hotel addresses. The spread between the nearest and farthest is under 3 km, so at Rs 130 per extra kilometre the possible difference is small, if that charge applies. But the card does not say where the NEGOMBO rate ends, so there is a real question for the counter: "Is the rate to my hotel's street included in Rs 3,780?" Give the counter your hotel name and street, show your booking, and ask for the total.

Our Sri Lanka map and distances guide lists Colombo to Negombo at about 38 km, which is from the city, not the airport. The airport is much closer to Negombo than the capital is.

Is there a bus from Colombo airport to Negombo?

We found no official one. The airport's bus pages list the 187 to Colombo Fort (Rs 325 a person, about 50 minutes) and a Makumbura bus (Rs 410 a person, about 50 minutes). Neither goes to Negombo. The airport's To and From Airport page lists app taxis, public transport, the AASL taxi service and private taxi services.

We also searched the NTC inter-provincial and expressway fare tables for a short Negombo to Katunayake route and found none. Local buses between the airport area and Negombo may exist but are outside those tables, and we have no source for their fares or timetable. So the honest answer is: for a first-night transfer, plan on a taxi or app, and treat a local bus as something to ask about on the day.

Should your first night be in Negombo?

Our Negombo guide is clear that being close to the airport is not by itself a reason to stay. Use this table as a decision rule.

Your situationNegombo first night?Why
You land late at nightOften yesThe card rate is the lowest on the list, and the drive is about 15 minutes with no traffic
You leave on an early flightOften yesShort and predictable, though you should still allow for traffic
You land in the morning and have the day freeMaybe notYou may prefer to go on to Colombo, the hills or the south coast
You want a city stayNoSee Colombo airport to Colombo city
You want rain-free beach daysCheck the seasonThe west coast is usually calmest from November to March, see Sri Lanka monsoon seasons

If you are travelling in the rainy period, take the weather seriously. Check the Department of Meteorology forecast and any beach warnings on the day, and do not rely on a fixed "minutes from the airport" promise, because traffic and rain change it.

How do you go on from Negombo?

Most first-night guests move on the next morning. These are the bus fares the NTC tables list from Negombo, effective 6 July 2026. We give the route number so you can match it at the bus stand. The tables do not give journey times or departure points.

The Kandy and expressway rows also appear on our Colombo airport to Kandy and Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa pages. For Sigiriya, which is a long drive from the airport, see Colombo airport to Sigiriya. The Hatton row is a long cross-country route, so ask locally about how long it takes before you plan a connection.

What else should you know before you go?

  • Cash: have some rupees ready for the driver or the bus. Our arrival guide covers exchange and ATMs at the airport.
  • Message your hotel: tell it your flight number and arrival time, and ask for the best way from the airport.
  • Luggage: the card does not state a bag limit, so ask the counter if you have a lot.
  • Going home: this card is the airport taxi service's rate list. We have no published rate for the trip back to the airport, so agree it with your hotel or driver in advance.
  • Next steps: the Colombo and west coast region page compares Negombo with Colombo and nearby stops.

For arrival steps before you reach the taxi counter, see our Colombo airport arrival guide. This page has no affiliate links, and we do not rank taxi firms or hotels.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to Negombo?

On the airport's fixed-fare card as read on 27 October 2026, NEGOMBO is Rs 3,780 for the air-conditioned taxi. That is the lowest rate on the card, shared with Katunayake, Ja-Ela, Seeduwa and Minuwangoda. The card shows no last-updated date, so check it again on the day.

How far is Negombo from Colombo airport?

About 11 km to the town centre. On an OpenStreetMap route (OSRM) sampled on 27 October 2026, the drive was 11.1 km and about 15 minutes with no traffic. A point in Periyamulla, north-east of the centre, was 10.6 km and 14 minutes, and Negombo Beach Park, further north, was 13.4 km and 19 minutes.

Is there a bus from Colombo airport to Negombo?

The airport's own bus pages list only the 187 bus to Colombo Fort and a bus to Makumbura. We found no official airport bus or fare for Negombo. The National Transport Commission fare tables we read do not list a short Negombo to Katunayake route either, so ask at the airport or use a taxi.

Does the Rs 3,780 rate cover the whole of Negombo?

The card has one NEGOMBO line. It does not say whether the rate covers the whole of the Negombo area or only the town. The airport page says Rs 130 is charged per extra kilometre beyond the requested destination, so ask the counter to confirm the rate for your hotel's area before you leave the lobby.

Should I stay in Negombo on my first night?

It can make sense if you land late or leave early, because the transfer is short and the card rate is the lowest on the list. Our Negombo guide explains that proximity alone is not a reason to add a night. Use it for the lagoon, town and beach, not just for the distance.

How do I get from Negombo to Kandy, Galle or Sigiriya?

The National Transport Commission fare tables effective 6 July 2026 list route 1/245 Negombo to Kandy at Rs 513 normal and Rs 1,002 air-conditioned luxury, and expressway routes from Negombo to Galle (Rs 1,370) and Matara (Rs 1,590). For Sigiriya see our airport to Sigiriya guide.

Is Negombo a good place to swim?

Check the day's conditions. Our Negombo guide says beach conditions need a current check, and the west coast is usually calmest from November to March. Follow local warnings and the Department of Meteorology.
