What is the best way from Colombo airport to Colombo city? (Checked 27 October 2026)

Quick answer: The easiest way is the airport's own taxi counter. On the airport's fixed-fare card, read on 27 October 2026, Colombo 01 Fort is Rs 8,100 and every Colombo district from 01 to 15 sits between Rs 7,884 and Rs 8,640. The cheapest way is bus 187 to Colombo Fort at Rs 325 a person. The drive is about 33 km and 29 minutes with no traffic, mostly on the Colombo to Katunayake Expressway.

Bandaranaike International Airport is at Katunayake, north of Colombo. "Colombo city" here means the postal districts Colombo 01 to 15 and the suburbs just outside them. If your first night is on the coast south of the city, see Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa. If you are heading to the hills, Colombo airport to Kandy has the options.

How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to Colombo city?

The airport's taxi service is supervised by Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka), which the airport calls AASL. Its Taxi Service page lists a fixed rate for each destination. The table on that page is filled in by a rate query when the page loads, so it can look empty if your browser blocks the script. We read the same rate table directly on 27 October 2026.

Card destination nameRate (Rs)
COLOMBO 01 - FORT8,100
COLOMBO 02 - SLAVE ISLAND8,100
COLOMBO 03 - KOLLUPITIYA8,100
COLOMBO 04 - BAMBALAPITIYA8,100
COLOMBO 05 - HAVELOCK8,640
COLOMBO 06 - WELLAWATTA8,640
COLOMBO 07 - CINNAMON GARDENS8,100
COLOMBO 08 - BORELLA7,884
COLOMBO 09 - DEMATAGODA7,884
COLOMBO 10 - MARADANA7,884
COLOMBO 11 - PETTAH8,100
COLOMBO 12 - ALUTHKADE7,884
COLOMBO 13 - KOTAHENA7,884
COLOMBO 14 - GRANDPASS7,884
COLOMBO 15 - MATTAKULIYA7,884

The spread across all 15 districts is Rs 756, from Rs 7,884 to Rs 8,640. That is small, so for most visitors the choice of district does not change the decision between taxi and bus. The card also lists suburbs outside the 15 districts. These are the ones people most often ask about:

Card destination nameRate (Rs)
WATTALA5,940
KELANIYA8,100
RAJAGIRIYA8,424
KOTTE9,612
DEHIWALA9,936
NUGEGODA10,152
MT.LAVINIA10,476
MAHARAGAMA11,340

If your hotel is not on the card, ask the counter which listed destination is closest and what extra the driver will charge. The airport page says Rs 130 is charged for each extra kilometre travelled beyond the requested destination, and Rs 300 for each extra drop within the agreed journey. Those two charges are the only add-ons the page lists.

How does the airport fixed-fare card work?

Here is what the airport page says, and what it leaves out:

  • Where to buy: the taxi service runs counters in the arrival lobby and at the arrival porch. The counter's phone number on the page is +94 11 226 3096.
  • Fleet: the airport says the service has a fleet of over 600 vehicles.
  • The rate: one air-conditioned rate per destination.
  • Not stated: how many passengers or bags the rate covers, and whether expressway tolls are in the price. Ask the counter both questions and get the total before you walk to the car.

The card covers the airport taxi service only. The airport lists private taxi operators at counters in the arrival lobby, and the apps, as separate options. We have no published prices for them.

A simple habit helps. Give the counter the exact name you see in the tables above, such as Colombo 03 or Mt.Lavinia, not just "Colombo". It avoids a dispute over which rate applies.

How long is the drive, and which road does it use?

On 27 October 2026 the OSRM driving route from the airport to Colombo Fort was 32.6 km and about 29 minutes with no traffic. The route leaves on the B208 Katunayake to Veyangoda road and the Canada Friendship Road, then joins the Colombo to Katunayake Expressway (E03) for about 24 km. It comes off onto the A1 New Kelani Bridge Road and finishes on city streets to Fort. The airport says bus 187 also uses the Colombo to Katunayake Expressway.

"No traffic" is the key phrase. A map sample is not a promise. Rain slows the roads, and the Department of Meteorology forecast of 27 October 2026 expects showers or thundershowers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, with fairly heavy falls above 75 mm likely at some places in those areas. If you land in the evening or during a downpour, allow extra time before a dinner booking or a check-in deadline.

Is bus 187 a good choice from the airport to Colombo?

Bus 187 is the airport's own air-conditioned luxury bus to Colombo Fort. The airport's page gives these facts:

  • It runs 24 hours a day.
  • It reaches Colombo Fort in about 50 minutes.
  • You board at the Departure Terminal Outer Porch of the airport.
  • The fare is Rs 325 per passenger. Baggage over 23 kg costs Rs 325 more.

The page gives no timetable, so we cannot tell you how often the bus leaves. Ask at the airport information desk or look for the bus at the porch.

The bus ends at Colombo Fort. From there you still need a way to your hotel. We have no official price for a tuk-tuk or app ride from Fort, so check the fare in the app or agree it before you set off. The bus saves a lot of money, but it works best if you travel light, your hotel is close to Fort, or you are not in a hurry.

Do the arithmetic for your own trip. Taking the card rate for Colombo 01 Fort (Rs 8,100) against the bus (Rs 325), the gap is Rs 7,775 for the trip. If two people take the bus the gap is smaller, because the bus is priced per passenger and the card does not say how many people the taxi rate covers.

What should you do first when you land?

Your transfer comes after the arrival steps. The airport lists four: immigration, baggage claim, customs and the arrival lobby. Our Colombo airport arrival guide walks through each one, including the card you fill in and what to have ready.

Then follow this order for the ride into town:

  1. Sort data first. Get a SIM or set up your eSIM in the lobby, so you can message a hotel or open a ride app. Our eSIM guide compares the choices.
  2. Check your hotel's Colombo number on your booking.
  3. Compare two prices. Ask the taxi counter for the total, then look at the same trip in a ride app. The airport does not publish app prices, so the app is the only way to compare.
  4. Sort out some cash. Our money and ATMs guide covers ATMs and exchange, and the arrival guide covers the airport's cash rules.
  5. Walk to the bus porch only if you chose the bus. It is a different place from the taxi counters.

If your flight lands late at night, the 24-hour bus gives you an option, but check how you will get from Colombo Fort to your hotel at that hour before you rely on it.

Does the airport taxi card say if the fare is per person or per car?

Which Colombo number is my hotel in?

Look at the hotel's address on your booking. Colombo addresses end in a number from 01 to 15, such as Colombo 03. The airport card lists each number as a separate destination, so give the counter that number, or the suburb name if your hotel is outside the 15.
