What is an easy Sri Lanka itinerary with parents?
Quick answer: Spend 9 days on a gentle loop by car and driver: one night in Negombo, Pinnawala's elephants on the way to two nights in Kandy, two nights in cool Nuwara Eliya, then three nights at the beach in Bentota with a day trip to Galle Fort. The longest day is the drive from Nuwara Eliya to Bentota (at least 3 hours 42 minutes), the hill roads are slower than the free-flow times shown, and every leg fits in daylight.
This plan is built for parents who want to see the highlights without long days, steep climbs or early alarms. It skips Sigiriya's climb and the Ella hikes on purpose. If your parents are keen walkers, see the two-week standard pace itinerary. If you are travelling with children too, see the family route with kids.
How long is each drive?
The longest leg is in bold. The times are free-flow OpenStreetMap routes (OSRM) with no traffic, checked on 26 October 2026, so treat them as minimums:
| Day | Drive | Distance | Time with no traffic |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Airport to Negombo | 11 km | 15 min |
| 2 | Negombo to Pinnawala | 81 km | 1 h 38 min |
| 2 | Pinnawala to Kandy | 40 km | 48 min |
| 4 | Kandy to Nuwara Eliya | 75 km | 1 h 34 min |
| 6 | Nuwara Eliya to Bentota | 211 km | 3 h 42 min or more |
| 8 | Bentota to Galle Fort and back | 55 km each way | 1 h 3 min each way |
| 9 | Bentota to the airport | 106 km | 1 h 29 min |
That adds up to about 634 km of driving over 9 days. Days 3, 5 and 7 have no transfer at all.
Hill roads are slower than these free-flow times. On 26 October 2026 a second router (Valhalla, on OpenStreetMap data) gave about 2 h 25 min for Negombo to Pinnawala, about 1 h 58 min for Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and about 4 h 48 min for Nuwara Eliya to Bentota. Ask your driver for their own estimate and add time for stops.
Day 1: Why start in Negombo?
Negombo is about 11 km and 15 minutes from the airport, so you are at your hotel quickly after a long flight. Nobody has to face a 3-hour drive on arrival. The Colombo airport arrival guide covers the airport itself.
Day 2: How do you fit Pinnawala in?
Pinnawala is on the way from Negombo to Kandy. The National Zoological Gardens publishes this timetable:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 10.00 am | Main herd leaves for river bathing at the Ma Oya |
| 12.00 pm | Small herd leaves for bathing |
| 2.00 pm | Main herd leaves again for river bathing |
The drive from Negombo is about 1 hour 38 minutes on a free-flow route, and a second router gives about 2 hours 25, so leave by about 7.30 am to reach the river by 10. If that is too early, a later start works for the 2 pm bathing, and Kandy is only about 48 minutes on. Tickets, rules and the zoo next door are in our Pinnawala guide. The elephants in Sri Lanka guide covers where else to see them.
Day 3: What is the easiest way to see Kandy?
Keep it slow. Walk part of the lake, then visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The UK government's advice says to cover your legs and shoulders and take off shoes and hats in Buddhist temples, and not to pose for photos in front of a Buddha statue. A light scarf and slip-on shoes save effort at the door. See what to wear in Sri Lanka.
Days 4 and 5: Why go to Nuwara Eliya?
The road from Kandy climbs into the tea country, about 75 km and 1 hour 34 minutes on a free-flow route (a second router gives about 1 hour 58), with plenty of places to stop. Nuwara Eliya is high and much cooler than the coast, so pack a warm layer for the evenings. Day 5 is a free day with no drive. The Ella vs Nuwara Eliya guide compares the two hill country bases.
What about the train? Newswire and the Daily Mirror reported on 25 October 2026 that train services between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola were suspended until further notice. We could not confirm train times on 26 October 2026, so this plan goes by road.
Day 6: How do you handle the long drive?
Nuwara Eliya to Bentota is the longest day, about 211 km and at least 3 hours 42 minutes on a free-flow route. A second router gives about 4 hours 48, so allow most of the day. To make it easier:
- Leave after breakfast, not at dawn, and plan a stop every hour or so.
- Aim to arrive before dark. The UK government says driving is erratic and road accidents are frequent, particularly at night.
- Keep water, snacks and any medicines in the car, not in the boot.
Days 7 to 9: Bentota and Galle Fort
Day 7 is a rest day at the beach. On day 8, Galle Fort is about 55 km and 1 hour 3 minutes away. The walls walk is flat and best in the late afternoon. On day 9, Bentota to the airport is about 106 km and 1 hour 29 minutes with no traffic, so you can have a relaxed morning before an evening flight.
How do you choose a car and driver?
The UK government's travel advice says that if you hire a vehicle, check the company is registered with the Sri Lanka Tourist Board and has a "Safe and Secure" certificate, and make sure the vehicle is roadworthy before you start. It also says public buses are often driven fast and poorly maintained, which is why this route does not use them.
Ask for a car with enough room for luggage and for parents to stretch their legs. Agree the daily plan, including stops, before you set off. Our driving in Sri Lanka guide explains why most visitors hire a driver rather than drive themselves.
How can you change this route?
- More culture. Add two nights near Sigiriya after Kandy for the cultural triangle. Sigiriya has a steep climb, so check it suits your parents.
- Fewer moves. Skip Nuwara Eliya and stay four nights in Bentota.
- Different month. See Sri Lanka in December and the best time to visit guide.
- Travelling with kids as well. See Sri Lanka with kids.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sri Lanka a good trip with older parents?
It can be, if you keep the drives short and the days slow. The longest day on this route is Nuwara Eliya to Bentota, at least 3 hours 42 minutes on a free-flow route and slower in practice, and no early starts except the optional Pinnawala bathing time.
Should we hire a car and driver or take buses?
A car and driver is easier with older parents. The UK government's travel advice says public buses are often driven fast and poorly maintained. If you hire a vehicle, it says to check the company is registered with the Sri Lanka Tourist Board and has a Safe and Secure certificate.
What time do the elephants bathe at Pinnawala?
The National Zoological Gardens timetable lists the main herd leaving for river bathing at the Ma Oya at 10.00 am and again at 2.00 pm, and the small herd at 12.00 pm. Plan your drive from Negombo to arrive by 10 am, or aim for 2 pm.
Is the train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya running?
Newswire and the Daily Mirror reported on 25 October 2026 that train services between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola were suspended until further notice. We could not confirm train times on 26 October 2026, so this route goes by road.
What should my parents wear at temples?
The UK government's travel advice says to cover your legs and shoulders and take off shoes and hats when entering a Buddhist temple. A light scarf and easy-to-remove shoes help. Do not pose for photos standing in front of a Buddha statue.
Why not drive at night?
The UK government's travel advice says driving is erratic and road accidents are frequent, particularly at night. Every leg on this route can be done in daylight if you start by mid-morning.
Can we shorten this to 7 days?
Yes. Drop the free day in Nuwara Eliya and one Bentota night. That keeps the elephants, Kandy, the tea country and Galle Fort, but makes day 5 the long drive.
