Tangalle to Galle: expressway, bus, train and taxi
Tangalle to Galle: 73 km, about an hour by the Southern Expressway, bus with a change at Matara, the Matara to Galle train, NTC route fares and what we could not verify. Checked 24 October 2026.

How do you get from Tangalle to Galle?
Quick answer: It is about 73 km by road, around 63 minutes in a car with no traffic, and the fastest route uses the Southern Expressway for most of the way. A taxi or private car is the quickest. By public transport there are two ways: a through bus if you can find one, or a bus to Matara and then the coast line train to Galle. There is no train from Tangalle itself. We could not verify bus times or a last bus, so ask on the day.
Tangalle is east of Matara and Galle is west of it. Our Tangalle page puts the town 35 km east of Matara, and Matara is the big town you pass through on the way. Most of this page is about that middle step, because it decides how easy the day is.
What are your choices, side by side?
| Option | Route | Distance and time | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi or private car | Tangalle to Galle via the Southern Expressway | 73.3 km, 63 min (OSRM) | Fastest; the driver may charge a toll, so ask |
| Taxi, coast road only | Tangalle to Matara to Galle | 81.0 km, 81 min (OSRM, two legs) | Slower, but through the towns |
| Through bus | A bus whose route ends at Galle or Colombo | Not published | Ask the conductor |
| Bus, then bus | Tangalle to Matara, then Matara to Galle | 36.5 km, then 44.5 km (OSRM) | Matara is the change |
| Bus, then train | Tangalle to Matara by road, Matara to Galle by rail | 36.5 km, then 42.9 km on the line | Check train times at Matara |
The coast road through Matara is the old way. The expressway saves about 18 minutes on OSRM's numbers (63 minutes against 81), though real traffic and a toll change the picture.
How does the Southern Expressway help?
The Southern Expressway, E01, was extended from Matara to Hambantota in February 2020. A government news release of 24 February 2020 says the Godagama to Barawakumbuka stretch opened that week, with 30 km from Godagama to Beliatta. The OpenStreetMap route for Tangalle to Galle follows the A2 out of Tangalle, joins the expressway, and comes off before Galle. That is why the car journey is only about an hour.
Public buses that use the expressway are listed separately by the NTC. Its expressway fare list effective 6 July 2026 has route EX 1 from Galle to Makumbura at Rs 930 and route EX 1-1 from Makumbura to Matara at Rs 1,170. Those are not Tangalle to Galle buses; they show which buses use the expressway near Galle and Matara. We found no expressway bus that starts at Tangalle on the NTC list, so do not plan on one.
Can you go by bus from Tangalle to Galle?
Possibly with one change. The NTC list effective 6 July 2026 includes these routes that matter here:
| NTC route | From and to | Full-route fare |
|---|---|---|
| 32-4 | Colombo to Tangalle | Rs 861 normal, Rs 1,292 semi-luxury, Rs 1,651 air-conditioned |
| 32-7 | Galle to Kataragama | Rs 767 normal |
| 333 | Matara to Kataragama | Rs 598 normal |
| 2-1 | Colombo to Galle | Rs 496 normal, Rs 970 air-conditioned |
| 2 | Colombo to Matara | Rs 681 normal, Rs 1,022 semi-luxury, Rs 1,320 air-conditioned |
These are end-to-end fares. A short ride costs less, and the list does not show the stops. Route 32-7 runs between Galle and Kataragama, which suggests it follows the south coast, and it could in principle serve Tangalle. We cannot say which stops it makes. A bus on route 32-4 heading back to Colombo might also pass through Galle, though it could use the expressway instead. Ask the conductor before you pay, not after.
If you cannot find a through bus, the usual plan is to take any bus to Matara and look for a bus to Galle there. Matara looks like a hub: the NTC list has many routes that start in Matara, including routes 11, 31, 31-1, 31-2, 333 and 363-12.
Can you take the train from Matara to Galle?
Yes, once you are in Matara. The Sri Lanka Railways Coast Line station table puts Matara at 156.813 km and Galle at 113.88 km from Colombo Fort, so the train covers about 42.9 km. From Colombo Fort, Galle is Rs 950 first class, Rs 500 second and Rs 240 third, and Matara is Rs 1,150, Rs 600 and Rs 300, on a fare table dated July 2022. That table only prices trips from Colombo Fort, so we cannot give a Matara to Galle fare. Ask at the Matara counter. Our Colombo to Galle train guide explains how to book a reserved seat and which stations take bookings. Matara, Galle and Beliatta are listed there with phone numbers.
There is no train from Tangalle. The nearest railhead is Beliatta, about 8 km away, according to our Weligama vs Mirissa vs Tangalle guide. Train times could not be confirmed online when we checked, so ask at Matara or check the seat reservation site on the day.
Which option should you choose?
- You have a flight or tour to catch: take a taxi on the expressway and leave early.
- You have time and want the lowest cost: bus to Matara, then train or bus to Galle.
- You have heavy luggage: a taxi, because two changes with bags are tiring.
- You want to see the coast: the coast road or the train, because the expressway skips the towns.
- It is raining hard: a car, because waiting at a bus stand in a storm is slow and wet.
What should you ask before booking a taxi?
There is no official tariff for this ride that we could verify. Ask for one price for the whole trip, say who pays any toll, and ask if the car is air-conditioned. Ask the driver how long they expect to take and whether they will stop at Matara if you want to change plans. If your car is going to Galle Fort or to Unawatuna, say so; Unawatuna is about 5 km from Galle according to our Galle vs Unawatuna guide.
What is the weather this weekend?
On 23 October 2026 the Department of Meteorology, as reported by Colombo Tribune, said rain would continue in the south-west until 27 October. For 24 October it forecast showers or thundershowers at times in the Galle and Matara districts, with strong gusts and lightning possible in thundershowers. Those two districts are on your route. Galle gets 344.5 mm of rain in an average October on the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals quoted on our Colombo to Galle train page. Allow extra time and check the forecast on the morning you travel.
