Sri Lankan dishes for first-timers

What to order on a first Sri Lanka trip: rice and curry, hoppers, string hoppers, kottu, mild versus spicy, and vegetarian plates, drawn from Sri Lanka Tourism. Checked 23 October 2026.

What should you order on a first visit?

Quick answer: Eat rice and curry first. Add hoppers or string hoppers at breakfast, and try kottu if you want a street plate. Sri Lanka Tourism describes rice and curry as the dish Sri Lankans miss abroad, and it maps spice from gentle coconut gravies up to very hot chicken curry. This is an ordering guide, not a restaurant list.

A longer food and restaurant mega-guide is not this page.

Rice and curry: the default lunch

Sri Lanka Tourism says that to a native Sri Lankan, nothing beats a hearty plate of rice and curry, and that many travellers still pack homemade curry when they go abroad. The picture it gives is a full plate of rice with a meat or fish curry, dhal curry, papadum, mallum (a green salad) and often a deep-fried chilli.

You do not have to eat every bowl. Point to the milder ones first. CNN describes parippu, or dhal curry, as the most common curry in Sri Lankan restaurants and homes. That is a safe first scoop if you are unsure.

This page does not publish a lunch price. No official tourist meal tariff was on the Tourism pages we opened on 23 October 2026. See trip cost for that evidence gap.

Mild versus spicy: how to order

Sri Lanka Tourism is direct: spiciness is a defining feature, and curry is the other. It then gives a useful scale, in its own words:

Dish Tourism namesHow Tourism describes the heatFirst-timer use
Kiri hodi"Not-at-all-spicy" coconut gravyAsk for this if chilli is a problem
Dhal curryMildly spicyDefault vegetarian scoop
Chicken curry"Eye-wateringly spicy"Share a little, or ask for less chilli
Pol sambolCoconut sambolTaste a pinch; it can be hot
Lunu mirisSpicy onion sambolOptional extra, not a main
Maalu ambulthiyalA sour fish curryOrder if you already like fish curry

Say "less chilli" when you order. Tourism's own range shows that "Sri Lankan food" is not one heat level.

The Guardian's 2024 brunch recipes treat kiri hodi as a creamy coconut gravy often paired with string hoppers, which matches Tourism's mild end of the table.

Hoppers, string hoppers, pittu and roti

Rice is not the only base. Sri Lanka Tourism lists uniquely Sri Lankan partners for curry:

  • Appa (hoppers): bowl-shaped pancakes. Egg hoppers (an egg cooked in the hopper) are a common breakfast order in visitor write-ups; Tourism names hoppers without grading restaurants.
  • Indi appa (string hoppers): steamed nests of rice-flour noodles. Eat them with kiri hodi or dhal.
  • Pittu: a coconut and flour cylinder, sliced and served with curry.
  • Roti: including godamba roti, the flatbread later chopped for kottu.

Order hoppers in the morning if the kitchen is still making them; rice and curry is the usual midday plate.

Kottu, without a restaurant ranking

Sri Lanka Tourism named kottu, hoppers and rice and curry together at a destination promotion in Vienna. That is enough to treat kottu as a standard visitor plate. It is chopped roti stir-fried on a metal griddle, usually with vegetables, egg, chicken or a mix.

Ask what is in the mix, especially if you are vegetarian. This page does not rank stalls in Colombo, Kandy or Galle.

Vegetarian and fish-avoiding plates

Tourism's rice-and-curry picture already includes several vegetable curries, dhal, mallum and sambols. Many plates can stay vegetarian if you skip the meat curry.

Two checks, because this site does not invent kitchen practice:

  1. Ask whether a vegetable curry is cooked with Maldive fish or meat stock.
  2. Treat fried snacks and kottu as mixed unless the cook says otherwise.

For travellers who also need halal status, certification is a separate check. Our Muslim travellers guide explains the Halal Assessment Council directory; it is not a restaurant ranking either.

What not to expect from this page

  • No "best restaurant in Colombo" list.
  • No claimed first-hand tasting notes.
  • No copied menu prices.
  • No affiliate booking links.

Use it to know the names on a lunch table, then confirm what is in the bowl. For a first-week route, pair it with the one-week first visit or the 12-day first-timers itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

What should a first-timer eat in Sri Lanka?

Start with rice and curry, then hoppers or string hoppers, and try kottu if you want a street plate. Sri Lanka Tourism calls rice and curry the dish natives insist on, and names hoppers, string hoppers, pittu and roti as the usual partners for curry.

Is Sri Lankan food very spicy?

Often, but not always. Sri Lanka Tourism says spiciness is a defining feature, then puts kiri hodi at the not-spicy end, dhal curry as mildly spicy, and chicken curry at the very hot end. Ask for less chilli, and start with kiri hodi or dhal.

What can vegetarians eat in Sri Lanka?

A rice and curry plate is built around vegetable curries, dhal, mallum (a green salad) and sambols, according to Sri Lanka Tourism's culinary pages. Confirm whether a curry uses Maldive fish or meat stock before you order.

What are hoppers and string hoppers?

Hoppers (appa) are bowl-shaped rice-flour pancakes; string hoppers (indi appa) are steamed nests of rice-flour noodles. Sri Lanka Tourism lists both with pittu and roti as foods you eat with curry instead of, or besides, a mound of rice.

What is kottu?

Kottu (also spelled kottu roti) is chopped godamba roti stir-fried on a griddle, usually with vegetables, egg or meat. Sri Lanka Tourism named kottu, hoppers and rice and curry together at a destination promotion. This page does not rank restaurants.

What should I order if I cannot take chilli?

Ask for kiri hodi (a coconut-milk gravy Tourism describes as not at all spicy) and dhal curry, and say you want it mild. Pol sambol and lunu miris are coconut and onion sambols that can be hot; taste a little first.

Does this guide list the best restaurants?

No. It is a short ordering guide for first visits. It does not rank restaurants, hotels or street stalls, and it has no affiliate links. A longer food and restaurant guide is scheduled separately.

How much does a meal cost?

No official page we opened on 23 October 2026 publishes a tourist meal price. Our trip-cost guide also found no official daily food budget. Confirm the price where you eat.
