Koggala to Galle: train, bus and tuk-tuk
How to get from Koggala to Galle: about 15 km by road, the NTC normal-bus fare worked out from the stage table, the rail gap, and a plan for stilt fishing then Galle Fort. Checked 24 October 2026.

How do you get from Koggala to Galle?
Quick answer: Koggala is about 15 km east of Galle, so the trip is short by any mode. By road it is 15.8 km and about 18 minutes with no traffic. A normal bus costs Rs 108 on our reading of the NTC stage table. The train also stops at Koggala, but we could not confirm times or a station to station fare. Tuk-tuks and taxis have no official tariff, so agree the price first.
Most people ask this question from the Koggala side because they are staying by the lake or the beach and want the fort. This page treats the trip as two halves of one day: what you do in Koggala before you leave, and what you do in Galle when you arrive.
What do the numbers say?
| Measure | Koggala to Galle | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Road distance, station to station | 15.8 km | OSRM, checked 24 Oct 2026 |
| Road time, no traffic | About 18 minutes | OSRM, checked 24 Oct 2026 |
| Drive from Galle town to Koggala Beach | About 15 minutes | Southern Province tourist bureau |
| Rail gap | 15.22 km | Worked out: 129.11 km minus 113.89 km from Colombo Fort |
| Normal bus fare | Rs 108 | Worked out from the NTC stage table |
| Train fare | Not on the table we can open | The fare table lists Colombo Fort fares only |
The tourist bureau also says regular buses run between Galle and Koggala, and that tuk-tuks cover the last stretch. We found no published timetable for either.
How is the bus fare of Rs 108 worked out?
On route 2 (Colombo to Matara along the Galle road), the NTC numbers each stop as a fare stage. The Galle bus stand is stage 57 and Koggala is stage 64, so the trip is 7 stages. The same table prices 7 stages at Rs 108. We checked the method against the Colombo to Galle fare: 57 stages cost Rs 496 on the table, which matches route 2-1 on our Colombo to Galle train guide.
This fare is for a normal bus only. The conductor sets the amount, and the stage of the stop where you board may be a little different from the one we used, so treat Rs 108 as a guide.
Should you go to Galle first or Koggala first?
Use this rule: do the thing that needs calm water first, and the thing that does not need it second.
| What you want | Do this first | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Stilt fishing and a lake boat trip | Stay in Koggala for the morning | Go to Galle for the fort in the afternoon |
| Galle Fort in soft light | Go to Galle early | Return to Koggala for a quiet beach |
| A museum visit on a wet day | Go to the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum in Koggala | Go to Galle later if the rain stops |
| A whale cruise | Go to Galle in the November to April season | Treat Koggala as the base for the rest of the day |
The tourist bureau gives about 6:00 to 8:00 am as the best time for stilt fishing, and says boat safaris on the lake usually last 1 to 2 hours. That is why Koggala works as the first half of the day. Once the water is not calm, the sights there lose much of their point, while the fort in Galle works in any light. Our Koggala guide has the full notes on stilt fishing, the lake and Madol Duwa island.
How do you go by train from Koggala to Galle?
Koggala has its own station on the coast line, and so does Galle. These are the stations between them, with the distance from Colombo Fort on the railway fare table as printed on our Koggala page.
| Station | Rail distance from Colombo Fort |
|---|---|
| Galle | 113.89 km |
| Unawatuna | 119.53 km |
| Habaraduwa | 127.39 km |
| Koggala | 129.11 km |
So a train leaving Koggala for Galle passes Habaraduwa and Unawatuna. If a train does not stop at every station, you may need to check before you board. The railway's timetable site did not load on 24 October 2026, so we cannot tell you which trains stop at Koggala. Ask at the station, and buy the ticket there if the counter is open.
What do you see in Galle?
Galle is a fortified town. UNESCO lists it as the Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications, and it is a living town with homes, shops and religious buildings, not a closed museum. Our Galle Fort guide suggests choosing a walking route that links the walls and streets, and checking each museum, church or mosque before you plan to go inside. The Galle guide explains why Galle is a heritage stop, not a beach town.
If you also want a swim, Unawatuna is a short ride from Galle and lies on the train line you just used. Our Galle vs Unawatuna guide compares the two.
Can you go whale watching from Galle?
Yes, in season. The Sri Lanka Navy runs southern cruises from Galle between November and April. On the Navy page as quoted on our Koggala guide, a foreign adult pays US$80 (US$60 plus US$20 tax) and a child aged 6 to 12 pays US$40. The cruise lasts about five hours, so it takes up most of a day. Check the departure time for your date on the Navy site, and do not plan it for the same day as the lake trip.
What is the weather doing this weekend?
The Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. on 24 October 2026 expects showers or thundershowers after 1.00 p.m. elsewhere on the island, with fairly heavy falls above 50 mm likely at some places. It expects more rain over the south-western parts of the island in the next few days and warns of temporary strong winds and lightning. Sea areas off Galle and Matara may be rough at times.
That favours a morning start. It also matters for the lake: on a stormy day, skip the boat and keep the museum for the afternoon. The table shows when Koggala is usually drier, using the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Galle.
| Month | Rain (mm) | Rain days |
|---|---|---|
| December | 175.9 | 11.2 |
| January | 86.8 | 6.6 |
| February | 71.1 | 5.8 |
| March | 89.9 | 6.9 |
| October | 344.5 | 18.2 |
The tourist bureau also names December to April as Koggala's dry season, and our Koggala guide says December to March is the dry window.
What should you check before you leave Koggala?
- Last way back: we could not confirm last departures, so decide how you will return before you go.
- Times: ask at the station or your guesthouse.
- Tuk-tuk price: agree it before you sit down, including any waiting time.
- Cash: carry small notes for the bus.
- Museum: the tourist bureau gives two different opening patterns for the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, so call ahead if you plan a Sunday visit.
