Ahangama to Galle: train, bus and tuk-tuk
How to get from Ahangama to Galle: a decision table, the 20 km road and rail gap, the NTC normal-bus fare worked out from the stage table, and what we could not confirm. Checked 24 October 2026.

What is the best way to get from Ahangama to Galle?
Quick answer: The bus is the cheapest published option, the train is the road-free option, and a tuk-tuk or taxi is the option for bags or a fixed meeting time. Galle is about 20 km west of Ahangama: 19.7 km and about 22 minutes by road with no traffic. On our reading of the NTC normal-bus fare table, the bus costs Rs 131. We could not confirm train or bus times, so check on the day.
Ahangama is a surf and cafe village on the coast road and railway. Galle is the city with the UNESCO-listed fort. The two are close enough that many people go to Galle for a day, so this page is about doing it without wasting time or money. If you are still choosing a base, read our Ahangama guide and the Galle guide first.
Which option fits you?
Use this table before you read the details. Find the line that sounds like your day.
| If this is you | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want the lowest published price and travel light | Normal bus | A fare of Rs 131 on the NTC stage table, from the Galle road |
| You hate traffic and your stay is near the station | Train | The line runs beside the sea and does not use the road |
| You carry a surfboard, a big bag or a child seat | Tuk-tuk or taxi | You load once and get off at your door |
| You must be in Galle for a set time | Taxi or tuk-tuk, booked the day before | The bus and train times are not confirmed |
| You are not sure of the last way home | Go early, and keep a taxi as backup | Last departures are unconfirmed |
How do the four options compare?
| Option | Distance | Cost we can source | Time we can source | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal bus, route 2 | About 20 km by road | Rs 131 (NTC stage table, worked out by us) | Not confirmed; road time with no traffic is about 22 minutes | Crowded at school and office hours; check where it stops |
| Train | 20.28 km by rail (worked out from the railway fare table) | No station to station fare on the table we can open | Not confirmed | Not every train stops at Ahangama |
| Tuk-tuk | 19.7 km by road | No official tariff; agree first | About 22 minutes with no traffic | A long ride in an open vehicle if it rains |
| Taxi | 19.7 km by road | No official tariff; agree first | About 22 minutes with no traffic | Ask whether the price includes waiting time |
"No traffic" is the OpenStreetMap routing time on 24 October 2026. Real journeys on this road take longer when it rains or when buses and trucks queue.
How is the bus fare of Rs 131 worked out?
The NTC publishes one fare table for each bus route. For route 2 (Colombo to Matara, along the Galle road) it lists every stop as a numbered stage, and each stage has a price counted from Colombo. For a trip between two stops, the NTC says to subtract the stage numbers and look up the fare for that many stages. We did that for you.
| Item | Stage number | Fare for that many stages |
|---|---|---|
| Galle bus stand | 57 | Not needed |
| Ahangama | 67 | Not needed |
| Difference | 10 stages | Rs 131 |
The table lists 10 stages at Rs 131 and 57 stages at Rs 496, and Rs 496 matches the Colombo to Galle fare on route 2-1 that we quote on our Colombo to Galle train guide. That check gives us some confidence in the method. It is still our own sum, and the NTC table is for normal buses only. Semi-luxury and air-conditioned buses use different tables. If the conductor asks for a different amount, ask which service you are on.
How do you go by train from Ahangama to Galle?
Both towns are on the coast line from Colombo Fort. These are the stations in order, with the rail distance from Colombo Fort on the Sri Lanka Railways fare table, and the gap to Galle that we worked out.
| Station | Rail distance from Colombo Fort | Gap to Galle |
|---|---|---|
| Galle | 113.89 km | 0 km |
| Unawatuna | 119.53 km | 5.64 km |
| Koggala | 129.11 km | 15.22 km |
| Ahangama | 134.17 km | 20.28 km |
The distances are from our Ahangama and Unawatuna pages and our Colombo to Galle train guide, which cite the railway table. That table prices tickets from Colombo Fort only, so it gives no Ahangama to Galle fare. Ask at the counter, and buy before you board if the station has one.
Our Ahangama page notes that not every train stops at Ahangama, and quotes one guesthouse that suggests riding to Weligama or Matara and taking a short tuk-tuk. If your train does not stop, that is the backup. The railway's online timetable did not load for us on 24 October 2026, so do not plan around a train time you read on another site without checking the railway or the station.
Where do you arrive in Galle?
The NTC lists the Galle stop on route 2 as the Galle bus stand. On OpenStreetMap, the bus stand and Galle railway station sit about 300 m apart in a straight line, so the two are within a short walk of each other. Our Colombo to Galle train guide puts the station and the fort about 500 m apart in a straight line.
That makes Galle easy: whichever of the two you choose, you arrive near the fort. A tuk-tuk is only needed if you carry bags or want to go on to the beach at Unawatuna, about 5 km away. Our Galle vs Unawatuna guide covers that hop.
What does a day trip look like?
This sample day uses no clock times, because we could not confirm any. It is an order of events, not a timetable.
- Morning in Ahangama. Have breakfast, then leave while the day is still cool. If you plan to surf, surf first. Our Ahangama page notes that one surf school meets its students at 6.30 am.
- Travel to Galle. Take the bus or train, or go by tuk-tuk. Allow extra time on a wet day.
- Walk Galle Fort. Our Galle Fort guide explains the walls and what to check on the day. The ramparts and streets do not prove that a museum or church is open, so check each one.
- Late afternoon on the ramparts. Our Ahangama page suggests this as the best time to walk them.
- Go home before you are tired. Decide your last way back before you leave Ahangama, and keep a taxi as backup.
What is the weather doing this weekend?
The Department of Meteorology's forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. on 24 October 2026 says showers or thundershowers will occur after 1.00 p.m. elsewhere on the island, with fairly heavy falls above 50 mm likely at some places. It also says an increase in rain is expected over the south-western parts of the island in the next few days, and warns of temporary strong winds and lightning. The sea areas off Colombo, Galle and Matara may be rough at times.
For this trip, that means: go in the morning, carry a rain cover for your bag, and do not plan to swim or surf on a rough day. October is also the wettest month at Galle on the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals, with 344.5 mm over about 18 rain days, as shown on our Colombo to Galle train guide. The table below shows the months in which the trip is driest.
| Month | Rain at Galle (mm) | Rain days |
|---|---|---|
| January | 86.8 | 6.6 |
| February | 71.1 | 5.8 |
| March | 89.9 | 6.9 |
| October | 344.5 | 18.2 |
The figures are the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Galle, the nearest station, as printed on our Koggala page. February is the driest month in the table.
What should you check before you go?
- Times: we could not confirm any bus or train time. Ask your guesthouse or the station on the day.
- Fare: keep small notes ready. The conductor sets the bus fare.
- Tuk-tuk price: agree it before you sit down.
- Last way home: know it before you leave.
- Weather: check the Department of Meteorology and call 117 for road conditions if heavy rain is forecast.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Ahangama from Galle?
About 20 km. The OpenStreetMap route we checked on 24 October 2026 between Ahangama station and Galle station is 19.7 km and about 22 minutes with no traffic. By rail the gap is 20.28 km, worked out from the Sri Lanka Railways fare table (Ahangama 134.17 km and Galle 113.89 km from Colombo Fort).

On our reading of the National Transport Commission (NTC) normal-service fare table effective 6 July 2026, Ahangama is fare stage 67 and the Galle bus stand is stage 57 on route 2. That is 10 stages, and 10 stages cost Rs 131 on the same table. Air-conditioned and semi-luxury buses use other tables. The conductor sets the fare, so keep small notes ready.
Is there a train from Ahangama to Galle?
Ahangama and Galle are both stations on the coast line, but not every train stops at Ahangama. Teya Beach, an Ahangama guesthouse, suggests riding to Weligama or Matara and taking a short tuk-tuk, as quoted on our Ahangama page. We could not load a timetable on 24 October 2026, so check at the station or on the seat reservation site.
How much is a tuk-tuk from Ahangama to Galle?
We found no official tuk-tuk tariff and publish no figure. Ask for a price before you get in, say whether the price is for the whole tuk-tuk, and ask if waiting time or luggage costs extra. For a trip of about 20 km, compare it with the bus fare above so you know what you are paying for.
Is it better to take the bus or the train from Ahangama to Galle?
Take the bus if a bus stop is close and you want the lowest published fare. Take the train if you want to avoid road traffic and a station is close to your stay. Neither has times we could confirm, so choose the one with the later last departure on the day.
Can I visit Galle Fort as a day trip from Ahangama?
Yes. The distance is short enough for a half day or a full day. Our Ahangama page suggests walking the ramparts in the late afternoon. Work out your last way home before you leave, because we could not confirm last departures.
Will the rain affect the trip this weekend?
The Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. on 24 October 2026 expects showers or thundershowers after 1.00 p.m. elsewhere on the island, with fairly heavy falls above 50 mm likely at some places.
