Colombo airport to Dambulla: about 128 km and 2 h 15 min with no traffic, the airport taxi counter's fixed fare card compared with Sigiriya and Habarana, two buses via Kurunegala, the expressway route and a same-day cave temple timing table. Checked 27 October 2026.

How far is Colombo airport from Dambulla?

Quick answer: Dambulla is about 128 km from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), around 2 hours 15 minutes by car with no traffic. The airport's own taxi counter lists a fixed fare to Dambulla. The cheapest way is two buses through Kurunegala, which add up to Rs 607 on published fares.

"Colombo airport" means BIA at Katunayake, north of Colombo. Dambulla sits inland in the Cultural Triangle, so the drive heads inland instead of south through Colombo. Our Dambulla guide covers the town itself, and the airport arrival guide covers what happens before the taxi counter.

What does the airport taxi to Dambulla cost?

The airport's own counter publishes a fixed fare, and Dambulla is on it. Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited supervises the airport taxi service and runs counters in the arrival lobby and at the arrival porch. Its taxi page lists a fare card by destination.

We did not sample ride-app or private driver prices, so we do not quote one. If you arrange a driver in advance, ask for the same three answers in writing. Our getting around Sri Lanka guide explains how to compare quotes without a standard price.

Is Dambulla cheaper than Sigiriya or Habarana by taxi?

Yes, on this card, by a clear margin. The same card lists the other Cultural Triangle towns, so you can compare before you decide where to sleep. These are the lines as read on 27 October 2026, sorted from the lowest rate.

Name on the cardCodeAir Conditioned Rate (SLR)
KURUNEGALAK049Rs 15,444
MATALEM025Rs 23,544
DAMBULLAD001Rs 24,192
HABARANAH001Rs 27,000
SIGIRIYAS005Rs 28,188
ANURADHAPURAA018Rs 30,240
POLONNARUWAP025Rs 34,020

Dambulla is Rs 3,996 below Sigiriya and Rs 2,808 below Habarana. Our airport to Sigiriya guide puts Sigiriya a further 17 km and 23 minutes beyond Dambulla on the same OSRM sample. If you want to sleep in Sigiriya but see the caves too, a Dambulla drop followed by a short local ride may cost more or less than the Sigiriya line. We found no official fare for that short hop, so get a quote. The Sigiriya or Dambulla comparison helps you choose the base first.

Which road does the drive to Dambulla take?

Local roads first, then the Central Expressway, then the A6. The OSRM sample route is below. Road names and references are as OpenStreetMap labels them, and the ramp and exit names come from the same map data, so confirm them with your driver.

Leg of the OSRM routeRoadApprox. distance
Airport to the expressway ramp signed for MirigamaKatunayake-Veyangoda Road (B208), Ekala-Kotadeniyawa Road (B111), Negombo-Mirigama Road (B324)33 km
Central Expressway to the exit signed for KurunegalaE0440 km
Kurunegala to DambullaA6, Kurunegala-Dambulla Road53 km

The distances do not add exactly, because the sample includes short links between roads. Our Dambulla guide lists Kurunegala at 72 km and 1 hour 17 minutes from the airport, and Kurunegala to Dambulla at 56 km and 1 hour 1 minute, from a different OSRM sample on 23 October 2026.

Who pays the toll? The fixed-fare card does not mention tolls. The RDA's expressway site says toll fees can be paid in cash at all expressways, card payment is offered to cardholders of Sri Lankan banks, and LankaQR apps also work. Carry rupees in cash in case you are asked to pay. The RDA's tariff is not published as text on the page we opened, so we quote no toll amount. The expressway hotline printed on the RDA site is 1969.

Is there a bus from Colombo airport to Dambulla?

Not a direct one, but two buses through Kurunegala do it. The NTC lists no bus from the airport terminal to Dambulla. Its inter-provincial list effective 6 July 2026 has the two legs below, and we read both rows again on 27 October 2026.

LegNTC routeNormal fareRoad distance (OSRM, our Dambulla guide)
Katunayake to Kurunegala5/245Rs 33172 km, 1 h 17 min
Kurunegala to Dambulla549Rs 27656 km, 1 h 1 min
TotalRs 607128 km, 2 h 15 min by car

The NTC lists give fares between end points, not stops or times, and they do not say where in Katunayake the 5/245 bus stops. Ask at the airport before you set off, and expect a crowded ride if you have big bags. You change buses at Kurunegala. We found no published times for either route, so we do not give a journey time. Our airport to Sigiriya guide also notes an NTC expressway bus from Colombo to Kurunegala (EX03/EX04, Rs 930), but it starts in Colombo, not at the airport.

Can you visit the Dambulla cave temple on the day you land?

It depends on when you leave the airport. The Central Cultural Fund lists the cave temple as open from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm, as our cave temple page records, and Sri Lanka Tourism recommends climbing the granite steps in the morning or the evening, not in the middle of the day. The table below is our own arithmetic: your time leaving the airport plus the 2 hours 15 minutes of the no-traffic OSRM sample.

You leave the airport atYou reach Dambulla at, no trafficWhat it means
8.00 amAbout 10.15 amA morning climb is possible, after you sort a bag drop or check-in
10.00 amAbout 12.15 pmMidday: Sri Lanka Tourism advises mornings or evenings, so rest first
12.00 noonAbout 2.15 pmCheck in, then climb later in the afternoon, before the 5.00 pm close
2.00 pmAbout 4.15 pmOnly 45 minutes before the 5.00 pm close

Real drives take longer, so push every arrival time later. If you land in the afternoon, a next-morning climb avoids racing the 5.00 pm close. Our cave temple page lists the dress code, photography rules and the ticket office near the Golden Temple. We do not repeat a ticket price here, because the ticket is not on the Central Cultural Fund price list. Confirm the amount at the office.

Which entrance? Sri Lanka Tourism describes four routes up to the temple: two from the Kandy road (A9), one from the Kurunegala to Dambulla road (A6) and one from the Valagamba Pirivena. On the OSRM sample the last road is the A6, which is where Sri Lanka Tourism places one of the four routes, so tell the driver which entrance you want. Foreign visitors buy tickets at the office near the Golden Temple.

What is the weather like when you land?

Our Dambulla guide cites Department of Meteorology averages for Matale District, where Dambulla is: 254.2 mm of rain in October, 331.7 mm in November and 314.5 mm in December (1991 to 2020). The same guide says the Department's seasonal outlook issued on 2 October 2026 expects above-normal rainfall in most parts of the country from October to December 2026, so pack for rain and ask your driver about road conditions on the day.
